A prototype of the long-awaited facelift of the Mercedes-AMG SL was photographed testing under harsh winter conditions at the Europa. The model, which is in its mid-life cycle, displayed camouflage concentrated on the front, indicating that the main visual changes will focus on the grille, bumper and, mainly, the headlights, which adopt a new and distinctive design.
Launched at the end of 2021, the current generation of the roadster was developed entirely by the AMG performance division, marking a return to its sportier roots. The update aims to keep the model competitive against its main rivals, incorporating the German brand’s latest technologies and design elements.
The images captured show the luxury convertible undergoing durability and low-temperature performance assessments, a standard procedure to ensure the reliability of new electronic components and systems before their introduction to the market. The expectation is that the renewed model will be officially presented in the coming months.
Visual changes focused on the front
The heavy camouflage on the front of the vehicle cannot completely hide the new features. The main highlight is the headlights, which now feature a light signature with a star pattern, a design detail that Mercedes-Benz has been implementing in its most recent launches and updates to reinforce the brand’s identity.
The iconic Panamericana grille appears to have gained larger dimensions, giving the roadster an even more imposing and aggressive appearance. The front bumper has also been redesigned, with new air intakes and a revised splitter, suggesting optimizations to improve airflow and aerodynamics at high speeds.
Interior with promise of technological modernization
Although the exterior receives occasional changes, the interior of the Mercedes-AMG SL could undergo a more significant transformation. Fotos of the cabin revealed that the dashboard and center console were covered, a strong indication that major updates are on the way, something that is not common in mid-cycle facelifts.
It is speculated that the MBUX infotainment system will be updated to a new version, possibly with a landscape format screen, similar to that found in the brand’s other top-of-the-range models. Essa change would be accompanied by more advanced software, with improved artificial intelligence and connectivity features, as well as new finishing materials and customization options.
Engine options must be maintained
The engine range of the current Mercedes-AMG SL is quite comprehensive and should be carried over to the restyled model, possibly with small power and efficiency adjustments. The line starts with the SL 43, equipped with a 2.0 four-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers 375 horsepower and has rear-wheel drive.
The most powerful versions have a 4.0 biturbo V8 engine. In the SL 55, it generates 476 hp, while in the SL 63, power increases to 585 hp, both with 4Matic+ all-wheel drive. The top of the range is occupied by the SL 63 S E Performance, a plug-in hybrid version that combines the V8 engine with an electric motor to produce an impressive 816 hp of combined power.
All models are equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission, which provides quick and smooth shifting. The all-wheel drive system was calibrated by AMG to prioritize driving dynamics, ensuring maximum grip and stability in various road conditions.
Technical and chassis improvements
In addition to the aesthetic changes, the Mercedes-AMG should take advantage of the update to further refine the SL’s dynamic behavior. Testing in snow and ice conditions suggests a special focus on calibrating the chassis, adaptive suspension and stability and traction control systems.
The objective is to improve the balance between comfort for long journeys and the agility expected from a high-performance sports car. Ajustes steering and braking can also be part of the package of improvements, providing an even more precise and engaging driving experience for the driver.
Positioning and competition in the market
The Mercedes-AMG SL occupies a prominent position in the brand’s portfolio, being an icon of luxury and sportiness since its first generation, in the 1950s. The current generation, codenamed R232, reinforced its sporty character by being an exclusive AMG project, sharing its platform with the new AMG GT Coupé. Esta mid-life update is crucial to maintain its relevance in a highly competitive segment, where it faces strong rivals such as the Porsche 911 Cabriolet and the BMW Série 8 Conversível. The Mercedes strategy is to combine the renewed design with cutting-edge technology to attract both the brand’s loyal customers and new buyers looking for a convertible that offers maximum performance, sophistication and onboard technology.
Details of the prototype spotted
The test vehicle used a combination of winter wheels and tires, essential for evaluation on low-grip surfaces. The presence of a quad exhaust at the rear indicates that the prototype probably corresponds to one of the versions equipped with a V8 engine, such as the SL 55 or SL 63.
Launch and arrival on the market
Considering the current stage of development, it is likely that Mercedes-Benz will officially present the restyled SL at the end of 2026, with sales starting globally shortly thereafter, as the following year’s model. The update will ensure that the roadster remains one of the most coveted objects of desire in its segment. Production will continue at the Bremen factory, at Alemanha, from where the model is exported to markets around the world.
