A tragic act of feminicide shook Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, on Monday, October 16, 2025, when 51-year-old public school teacher Luciene Naves Correia was fatally shot in the Osmar Cabral region. Authorities suspect her ex-husband, who reportedly invaded her home and carried out the attack, fleeing only after attempting to murder their pregnant daughter.

The incident culminated in a tense confrontation with law enforcement, where the 61-year-old suspect was killed after resisting arrest. The violence has cast a somber shadow over the community, prompting widespread condemnation of gender-based violence and mourning for a dedicated educator.

Emergency services, including SAMU, were dispatched to the scene, confirming the deaths of both Luciene Correia and her ex-husband, whose identities have been withheld pending further investigation details regarding the confrontation.

The calculated ambush

According to the Civil Police, Luciene Correia was discovered deceased on the sidewalk of her residence following a meticulously planned assault. Investigations reveal the ex-husband’s deliberate actions to lure her out, beginning with cutting the power supply to the house.

The assailant then reportedly scaled the wall of the property and concealed himself, patiently waiting for Luciene to emerge and inspect the electrical panel. As she stepped outside to ascertain the cause of the power disruption, she was ambushed and shot by her former partner.

Daughter’s narrow escape

The couple’s daughter, who was present during the horrific events, provided a chilling account to the authorities. She recounted how her father, the victim’s ex-husband, had premeditated the crime, indicating a sinister intent behind his actions.

After shooting Luciene, the perpetrator turned his aggression towards his pregnant daughter, who had barricaded herself in a bedroom. He attempted to force his way into the room but was unsuccessful in breaching the door. Frustrated by his inability to harm her, he fled the scene, taking the murder weapon with him and heading towards the Jardim Liberdade neighborhood.

Pursuit ends in fatal confrontation

The suspect’s escape was short-lived. An off-duty police officer, recognizing the man, intercepted him while he was attempting to evade capture. The officer issued a verbal command for him to surrender and comply with the arrest.

However, the suspect refused to comply, reportedly drawing his weapon and pointing it at the officer in a direct act of resistance. The officer, in turn, reacted swiftly, firing at the man, which resulted in his immediate death at the location.

Remembering a committed teacher

Luciene Correia, at 51 years old, was a cherished figure in the public education system. She served as a dedicated teacher at the Municipal School Constança Palma Bem Bem and had been a valued faculty member of the Cuiabá City Hall since 2009.

Her commitment to education extended to roles as a CAD (Caregiver for Students with Disabilities) since 2026, demonstrating her profound dedication to inclusive learning environments. Colleagues and students remember her for her warmth and unwavering commitment.

The community fondly recalls her significant contributions, highlighting how her passion for teaching and ethical approach left a lasting mark on countless lives she touched throughout her career. Her legacy of knowledge and compassion is deeply felt by all who knew her.

Public outcry against feminicide

The mayor of Cuiabá, Abílio Brunini, issued a heartfelt statement expressing profound sorrow over the teacher’s untimely death. His message underscored the imperative to confront and eradicate the persistent cycle of violence against women that plagues society.

“May God receive this woman with His infinite blessing. This cycle of violence against women must be repudiated and combated daily,” stated Mayor Brunini, emphasizing the urgency of addressing gender-based crimes.

The Sintep-subsede of Cuiabá, a teachers’ union, also released a poignant note lamenting the loss. The union extended its deepest condolences and solidarity to Luciene’s family and friends, recognizing her as a victim of feminicide perpetrated by her ex-partner.

The union’s statement highlighted her indelible mark on the EMEB Contança Figueiredo Palma Bem Bem community, where her dedication and affection for students were widely recognized. It called for comfort for her grieving family and affirmed that her profound legacy in education will endure.

Understanding the tragic phenomenon

Feminicide, the gender-related killing of women, remains a critical issue in Brazil, reflecting deeply ingrained societal problems. These crimes often stem from a history of domestic violence and power imbalances within relationships, frequently escalating tragically.

Experts highlight the importance of recognizing early warning signs and providing robust support systems for victims. The broader context includes societal norms that sometimes normalize controlling behaviors, making intervention and prevention strategies essential for public safety.

Calls for prevention

Incidents like Luciene Correia’s murder intensify calls for more effective public policies aimed at protecting women and combating gender-based violence. Authorities and civil society organizations advocate for strengthened legal frameworks, greater awareness campaigns, and expanded support networks for women at risk.
