Stellantis scales Firefly engine in Europe to replace PureTech and fix plated belt failures

Stellantis has officially started the process of gradually replacing 1.2 PureTech engines with the Firefly family in its Europa vehicle line. The strategic measure’s main objective is to resolve chronic issues of mechanical reliability and regain consumer confidence on the continent. The technical change represents a significant step in the integration of engineering platforms between the former FCA and PSA.

The central focus of the change lies in the elimination of the oil-bathed toothed belt system, a feature of the PureTech design that generated several reports of premature wear and obstruction of the vacuum pump. The new engine adopts the use of a metal timing chain, a solution considered more robust and durable for the life cycle of the automobile.

This transition not only resolves mechanical vulnerabilities, but also aligns the European portfolio with new environmental requirements. The Firefly thrusters arrive adapted for 48-volt light hybrid systems, ensuring compliance with the strict Euro 7 emissions standards that come into force in the region.

The implementation will occur in a staggered manner, prioritizing high-volume models that require mid-cycle updates or new generations. The automaker’s engineering validated the change after extensive durability tests, taking advantage of the technical base already consolidated by Fiat in other global markets.

Structural failures led to the replacement of the propellant

The 1.2 PureTech engine, originally developed by PSA, faced increasing criticism due to the degradation of its timing belt when in contact with lubricant. Partículas of rubber loosened by chemical wear ended up clogging the lubrication system, causing drops in oil pressure and, in extreme cases, engine meltdown.

Owners of vehicles equipped with this technology reported an increase in oil consumption and the need for corrective maintenance well before the deadline stipulated in the manual. Stellantis, recognizing the impact on the brands’ image, chose to discontinue this architecture in favor of the project of Italian origin, which uses chain and eliminates this type of risk.

Impacted models and update schedule

The list of vehicles that will receive the new mechanical hearts covers the group’s main brands. Entre compacts, the Peugeot 208 and the Citroën C3 are in line for the update, followed by compact SUVs such as the Peugeot 2008 and the Opel Mokka, which have a large representation in sales.

Larger models, such as the Peugeot 3008 and the Citroën C5 Aircross, are also part of renovation planning. The introduction of the new engines will coincide with aesthetic and equipment updates scheduled to maintain the competitiveness of these products against Asian and European competition.

The production of the Firefly engines at Europa was adjusted to meet the demand of these assembly lines. The engine factories were readjusted to guarantee the necessary volume, ensuring that there are no supply bottlenecks during the technological transition period.

Technical validation based on Brazilian experience

The decision to adopt the Firefly family in the Europa was strongly influenced by the performance history of these engines in the Brazilian market. No Brasil, where thrusters have equipped Fiat models for years, the architecture has proven to be resistant and reliable, even under severe conditions of use and varied maintenance.

Data collected on América from Sul served as a basis for European engineers to refine the system’s calibration and durability. The robustness demonstrated by the aluminum blocks and the control chain system was decisive for the choice of Stellantis to globalize this technical solution.

In addition to reliability, the modularity of the Firefly design allowed rapid adaptation to the light electrification systems required in the Europa. Essa flexibility ensures that the group keeps its production costs controlled while offering safer technology to the end customer.
