On January 29, Nvidia officially announced the arrival of the GeForce Now native application for the Linux ecosystem. The new feature, available in beta format, allows users of the open operating system to access the cloud gaming service directly through an executable, eliminating the need for web browsers for streaming. The launch initially focuses on the Ubuntu 24.04 distribution, meeting an old demand from the community that sought greater integration and performance on the platform.

The installation file can now be obtained through the company’s official website and marks an important moment for the accessibility of high-performance games on machines that do not have dedicated cutting-edge graphics hardware. The technology uses the processing of Nvidia video cards on remote servers, transmitting the image to the user’s device with low latency.

While the initial focus is on the latest version of Ubuntu, the developer has confirmed that there are concrete plans to expand compatibility to other popular Linux distributions in future updates. The strategy aims to cover the natural fragmentation of the operating system and ensure that more players can enjoy the catalog of AAA titles without technical barriers.

The transition from browser use to a dedicated application promises significant improvements in connection stability and the visual quality of games. The software was designed to make better use of system resources, offering a more fluid and responsive experience, essential for competitive and fast-action games.

Technical requirements and installation

To run the new beta app, users need to meet certain hardware and software specifications. The system requires a processor with x86 or x64 architecture, dual-core and a minimum frequency of 2.0 GHz. It is essential that the graphics hardware has support for video decoding in H.264 or H.265 formats, essential for receiving the game’s video stream.

In terms of connectivity, Nvidia recommends an internet speed of at least 15 Mbps for broadcasts in 720p resolution at 60 frames per second. Para For those who want to increase the quality to 1440p, the bandwidth requirement increases to 35 Mbps, making it ideal to use a wired connection to minimize latency and avoid oscillations during matches.

The installation process differs slightly from traditional packages like .deb or Snap. The user must download a binary file (.bin) from the Nvidia portal. Após the download, it is necessary to use the Linux terminal to grant execution permissions to the file, using specific commands such as chmod, before starting the installer. Once configured, login is done with the service’s existing account.

Users who have video cards from Nvidia must keep their drivers updated to version 580.126.09 or higher. Já for those using AMD or Intel hardware, the recommendation is to use Mesa 24.2.8 or newer versions, ensuring full compatibility with the application’s hardware acceleration features.

Features and performance on Linux

The native application offers clear advantages over the previously used web version. Assinantes of the Priority plan can achieve resolutions of up to 1440p at 60 FPS, while members of the Ultimate tier have access to even more robust graphics settings, including the use of Ray Tracing and unlocked frame rates depending on connection quality.

The user interface has been ported to maintain familiarity with the Windows and macOS versions. Isso includes game library management, quick search for titles and direct integration with digital stores such as Steam, Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Connect. Peripheral support is also native, allowing the use of a keyboard, mouse and various gamepad models without the need for complex configurations.

One of the strengths highlighted by the community is the elimination of “workarounds” or third-party solutions that were often necessary to make the service work properly on different distributions. With official support, the expectation is that compatibility errors and input lag problems will be drastically reduced.

Compatibility with Steam Deck and laptops

The launch of the beta also positively impacts owners of Linux-based portable devices, such as the Steam Deck. Como the operating system of the Valve console, SteamOS, is based on Linux (Arch), the availability of a native client facilitates the integration of the cloud service on the device, expanding the gaming possibilities beyond the device’s local hardware.

Initial user reports indicate that the configuration in Arch Linux-based environments, although not the official primary focus (which is Ubuntu), has worked satisfactorily. The app’s recognition of the Steam Deck’s integrated controls eliminates barriers to entry for those who prefer to play in portable mode.

Consistency between the desktop and portable experience is one of the goals of Nvidia. By unifying the application’s code base, the company is able to deliver updates and fixes more quickly for all supported platforms, keeping the ecosystem cohesive.

Expansion and future of the service

Nvidia has already signaled that work on the Linux application is just beginning. Além to expand official support for distros such as Fedora and OpenSUSE, the development team is focused on implementing more efficient codecs such as AV1. Essa technology is crucial to delivering better image quality while consuming less bandwidth, something vital for the future of cloud gaming.

The feedback collected during this beta phase will be decisive for the update roadmap. The company maintains open channels for the community to report bugs and suggest improvements, a common and valued practice in the free and Linux software environment. System stability in different graphical environments (GNOME, KDE Plasma, etc.) is one of the points of attention.

With weekly catalog updates, the GeForce Now continues to add new compatible games. The arrival of the native app on Linux reinforces the company’s commitment to not leaving any platform out of the cloud gaming revolution, allowing the penguin system to be a viable option for hardcore gamers.
