Steam update prioritizes cards with more memory and adjusts data collection on PCs with multiple GPUs

Valve has implemented significant technical changes to the digital platform’s beta client to refine the accuracy of user-submitted hardware searches. The main focus of the change lies in the way the software identifies and records video memory on computers that have more than one graphics processing unit installed, aiming to eliminate historical inconsistencies in monthly reports.

Adjustments to component detection

The modifications introduced in the test pipeline seek to resolve a long-standing issue in the data collection architecture, where the system often selected the integrated or secondary GPU as the primary device. Esse behavior generated distortions in global statistics, as these units often have less dedicated memory than high-performance discrete graphics cards used for games.

With the new protocol established by the developer, the search tool automatically prioritizes the video card that offers the largest amount of VRAM available in the system. The expectation is that this technical correction will result in an increase in the representation of cutting-edge hardware in future surveys, offering a more faithful picture of the real equipment of players around the world.

This recalibration is essential for studios and developers, who use this public data to define the minimum and recommended requirements for their releases. By ensuring dedicated cards are correctly accounted for, you avoid underestimating the average graphics power of your installed user base.

Recent fluctuations in reporting

The data collected in January indicated atypical movements that reinforce the need for these reading corrections. The segment of cards with 8 GB of VRAM registered an abrupt drop of 3.11%, standing at 29.57% of the total, a variation that hardly reflects a real change in hardware in such a short time, but rather fluctuations in the detection methodology.

On the other hand, configurations equipped with 16 GB of video memory showed a significant growth of 5.85%, reaching a share of 14.55% of survey participants. Embora the market naturally moves towards larger memory capacities, the speed of this change suggests that many of these devices already existed, but were not correctly reported by the previous algorithm.

Another range that suffered an impact was the 12 GB range, which saw a decline of 4.01%, ending the period with a 15.07% share. Valve did not detail whether these specific discrepancies were the triggers for the immediate update, but the application of the new patch in February indicates an effort to clean up these metrics before the next review cycle.

Stability in RAM standard

Unlike the volatility observed in GPUs, the system’s RAM memory monitoring showed predictable and stable behavior in the latest benchmark tests. The 16 GB configuration continues to be the predominant choice, present on 40.24% of computers audited, consolidating itself as the industrial standard for running modern games.

The variations recorded in this component were minimal, less than 1% compared to the previous year’s closing, demonstrating that the main memory update cycle is slower than the graphics processing cycle. Para most current titles, this amount of memory remains sufficient to guarantee a fluid experience, without the need for immediate upgrades by consumers.

The maintenance of legacy and intermediate hardware in statistics reflects the high cost of cutting-edge components in the global market. Steam’s initiative to adjust its measurement tools is a technical step towards ensuring that the diversity of the PC gaming ecosystem is clearly understood, regardless of the complexities of hybrid configurations.
