Stellantis renews 2.0 turbo Hurricane EVO engine with F1 ignition and reaches 337 hp
The Stellantis features a significant update to its 2.0 turbo engine Hurricane 4, now called Hurricane 4 EVO. The Este engine, which originally debuted in the Alfa Romeo Giulia in 2016, now incorporates advanced technologies, including an ignition system inspired by the Fórmula 1, increasing its power to an impressive 337 hp and 45.9 kgfm of torque, with the aim of surpassing the competition in its category.
Initially launched on the North American market to equip versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 2026, the Hurricane 4 EVO demonstrates the automaker’s commitment to innovation and high performance. The expectation is that this engine will soon be expanded to other models in the group and reach global distribution, following in the footsteps of its predecessor version.
In the Brasil, the 2.0 turbo engine is already a key component in vehicles such as the Jeep Compass, the Jeep Commander and the Ram Rampage pickup truck, where it delivers 272 hp of power and 40.8 kgfm of torque. The arrival of the EVO version promises to further raise the level of performance and energy efficiency for the brand’s vehicles.
Advanced ignition technologies
One of the pillars of the transformation of the Hurricane 4 EVO is the adoption of the jet ignition system, called Turbulent Jet Ignition (TJI). Essa technology, unusual for large-scale production engines, bears similarities to the mechanisms used in the engines of the Fórmula 1 and the 630 hp 3.0 V6 twin-turbo
The operation of the TJI is based on a cup-shaped pre-combustion chamber, inserted inside the main combustion chamber. Durante the compression phase, the fuel and air mixture is driven into this pre-chamber, where a spark plug ignites the gas and launches high-energy flame jets into the main chamber, optimizing the combustion process.
Significant gains in efficiency and performance
According to data released by Stellantis, the implementation of TJI results in extremely fast and complete combustion. Este advanced process not only significantly reduces pollutant emissions, but also optimizes fuel consumption and provides a notable increase in engine power. In practice, the new 2.0 turbo achieves 20% more power using 10% less fuel compared to the previous generation. No Jeep Grand Cherokee, for example, the engine guarantees acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in a range between 6.0 and 7.0 seconds, a robust towing capacity of 2,812 kg and a combined consumption that can reach 9.8 km/l.
Technical details and mechanical improvements
In direct comparison with the Hurricane 4 version currently available on the Brazilian market, the Hurricane 4 EVO maintains the dimensions of a diameter of 84 millimeters and a stroke of 90 millimeters. Contudo, the turbocharger received an important update, incorporating variable geometry, which allows up to 35 psi of pressure to be injected into the cylinders and offers faster responses, especially at low speeds.
Torque delivery has been meticulously optimised, with 90% of the 45.9 kgfm available across a wide range between 2,600 rpm and 5,600 rpm. Maximum power is reached at 6,000 rpm, highlighting the engine’s high performance capacity. Além Furthermore, the engine operates with a compression ratio of 12:1 and uses the efficient Miller cycle, which contributes to its remarkable energy efficiency.
Noise and vibration reduction
Various engineering solutions have been applied to the Hurricane 4 EVO to improve driving comfort, focusing on reducing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). One of the innovations is the use of thicker cylinder walls, which benefit from the replacement of traditional liners with a superfine powdered iron coating, providing greater robustness and less internal friction to the engine.
Additionally, the main and connecting rod bearings have been resized to be larger, contributing to smoother operation and reducing long-term wear. Essas Modifications are crucial to engine longevity and maintaining consistent operation under a variety of usage conditions.
Another significant measure for acoustic and tactile comfort was the implementation of a fluid-filled crankshaft vibration damper. Esta technology is designed to absorb and dissipate vibrations generated by the engine, providing a more refined and quieter driving experience for vehicle occupants.
Expansion and future of the Stellantis thruster
Within the strategic scope of the Stellantis group, the new 2.0 turbo engine is scheduled to progressively replace both the current Hurricane 4 and the old 3.6 V6 Pentastar aspirated. Essa transition aims to standardize and optimize the engine line, focusing on more powerful and efficient units, aligned with contemporary demands for performance and sustainability.
The engine has already started to be integrated into key models in the Estados Unidos, such as the renewed Jeep Grand Cherokee 2026. The list of vehicles that will soon feature this innovation includes the Jeep Wrangler, the Jeep Gladiator, the Jeep Cherokee and the new generation of the Ram Dakota, an exclusive model for the North American market, demonstrating the versatility of the engine.
In addition to the Jeep and Ram line, the Hurricane 4 EVO expansion strategy foresees its arrival in other important vehicles of the group, including models from the Essa scope underlines Stellantis’s intention to consolidate the new 2.0 turbo as one of its main global engines, boosting the performance of several platforms.
Although the Stellantis has ambitious plans for the EVO engine, the exact date for its introduction to the Brazilian market has not yet been announced. Atualmente, the 2.0 turbo version already in use here, which equips the Jeep Compass and other vehicles, was recently adapted to operate with flex technology, maintaining its 272 hp of power and 40.8 kgfm of torque.
Impact of the new generation on the market
The upgrade of the Hurricane 4 engine to its EVO version represents a milestone for the Stellantis, positioning the company with cutting-edge technology in the four-cylinder engine segment. The incorporation of elements inspired by the Fórmula 1 not only raises the bar for performance, but also redefines what is expected in terms of efficiency and refinement for mass production vehicles. The gradual arrival of this engine in the different markets and models of the automotive group will have a considerable impact on the competitiveness and innovation image of Stellantis, promising a new era for its global consumers.
