Microsoft introduced a new and long-awaited feature in Windows 11, promising to optimize the user experience from the first steps with the operating system. Esta innovation allows users to freely define the profile folder name during the initial software configuration process.

This update represents a direct response to a long-standing community request. The change is mainly aimed at avoiding the automatic generation of folder names that were often inconvenient or excessively long and complex for daily management.

The new feature has already been made available in preview versions for participants in the Windows Insider program, marking a significant advance in the usability of the system, as announced in March 2026.

History and improvement

Previously, Windows 11 created user folders based on information such as email addresses or profile names of the linked Microsoft account. Essa practice often resulted in long strings of characters that were impractical for navigating and organizing files.

The previous automation, without clear customization options on the installation screen, represented a point of frustration for many, who wanted a more intuitive and easier to remember directory structure.

Ease of defining the name

With the latest update, a field called “User Folder Name” will appear prominently on the screen where the user chooses their computer’s name during initial system setup. Isso eliminates the need to resort to complex methods, such as using the command prompt, which were previously the only way to change these names after installation. Microsoft emphasizes that this straightforward approach makes selecting custom names considerably easier and more accessible for everyone, from the first moment they interact with the new system.

Naming and application rules

It is essential to emphasize that, although customization is expanded, the choice of names for user folders must follow the standard naming conventions established by Windows. Isso implies that selection is limited to characters such as letters, numbers, and certain symbols allowed by the operating system, ensuring compatibility and stability.

This customization option is exclusive to the time of initial configuration of the

Availability for testers

The user folder name customization functionality was first implemented in the preview versions of Windows 11 Dev Channel, under build 26300.8068, allowing developers and enthusiasts to test the feature.

Later, the same update was extended to Beta Channel (build 26220.8062), both versions officially made available on March 13, 2026, by the Windows Insider program.

Microsoft confirmed that this implementation is an expansion of a feature that began testing and rolling out to Insider program participants as early as Fall 2025, solidifying demand for this flexibility.
