China consolidates its prominent position in the development of open source artificial intelligence, creating a self-reinforcing competitive advantage that allows it to challenge the leadership of Estados Unidos in AI, even with restrictions on access to advanced chips. An advisory body to the American Congresso highlighted this dynamic in a recently released report. Modelos of large Chinese companies, such as Alibaba, Moonshot and MiniMax, dominate usage rankings on global AI model sharing platforms.

The advance comes despite successive rounds of restrictions imposed by the Estados Unidos since 2022, which limit the export of high-performance AI chips to the China. Empresas Americans like OpenAI and Anthropic invest billions to stay ahead of the curve, but the Chinese open ecosystem allows innovation close to the technological frontier, even with computational limitations.

Cost advantage drives global adoption

Chinese models attract users due to their low cost and ease of customization. Plataformas like HuggingFace and OpenRouter register Chinese dominance in downloads and active use. The Qwen family of Alibaba surpassed the Llama of Meta in global cumulative downloads.

Around 80% of American AI startups use Chinese open source models, according to estimates. DeepSeek’s R1 model, launched last year, quickly became one of the most downloaded in app stores in the Estados Unidos, surpassing ChatGPT in certain periods.

Western companies, including Germany’s Siemens, adopt these models to train industrial automation systems, citing advantages in cost and parameter customization without noticeable disadvantages.

China prioritizes physical AI and real data collection

The Chinese government is driving the application of AI in manufacturing, logistics and robotics, generating massive volumes of real-world data. Esses data feeds the continuous improvement of models.

The transition to embodied AI, such as in humanoid robots and autonomous driving, favors China due to the ability to collect data at scale. Centros of innovation in humanoid robotics in Pequim exemplify this strategic focus.

Chinese robotics companies plan IPOs this year, reinforcing the designation of embedded AI as a priority industry.

Implementation gap worsens over time

Experts note a growing gap in embedded AI implementation between Estados Unidos and China. The Chinese open ecosystem mitigates computational limitations and accelerates innovation.

The commission monitors China’s use of AI in biotechnology, quantum computing and advanced materials. The report emphasizes that the proliferation of open models creates alternative paths to AI leadership.

Adoption despite risk concerns

Some analysts warn of security risks associated with reliance on Chinese models, including possible biases aligned with government positions. Mesmo therefore, adoption continues at a rapid pace for economic reasons.

The report concludes that China is positioned to capitalize on the shift to agentive and physical AI, where real data and application scale confer concrete advantages.
