South Korean manufacturer Samsung has started the global rollout of a new operating system update that changes the functionality of its mobile devices. The One UI 8.5 software allows Galaxy smartphones and tablets to be used natively as high-resolution webcams on desktop and notebook computers. The measure eliminates the need to install third-party applications to bridge communication between devices.

The feature was developed to meet the ongoing demand for video quality in remote work environments, corporate meetings and distance learning. The connection between the mobile device and the computer is direct via a USB cable, which guarantees the stability of the video signal during prolonged transmissions. The technology makes use of the advanced optical set present in cell phones.

The functionality officially debuted with the launch of the Galaxy S26 series, which already has the operating system installed at the factory. The company confirmed that the tool will be expanded to other models in the portfolio through gradual software updates. The brand’s objective is to integrate the mobile ecosystem with the most used computer operating systems on the market.

Native integration with video conferencing platforms

Activating your cell phone camera on your computer only requires a physical connection and security confirmation on the mobile device screen. The PC operating system immediately recognizes the smartphone as a standard webcam, without the need for additional drivers. Isso allows immediate use on corporate communication platforms and video calling applications.

During use, the cell phone displays a simplified interface that allows the user to manage video settings directly on the touch screen. It is possible to switch between the front and rear lenses of the device without interrupting the image transmission to the computer. The interface also offers quick controls for zoom and framing adjustments.

The connection via USB cable was chosen by the brand’s engineers to avoid latency and resolution drops common in video transmissions over wireless networks. The continuous power supply provided by your computer also prevents your smartphone battery from running out during long meetings. The device automatically manages internal heating to maintain performance.

Artificial intelligence resources applied to the image

The One UI 8.5 system incorporates image processing algorithms that optimize video quality in real time. The technology automatically adjusts exposure, contrast and white balance based on ambient lighting conditions. Isso results in sharp images even in low-light or strong backlit locations.

One of the integrated technical features is automatic framing, which uses artificial intelligence to track the user’s face. The camera adjusts the cropping of the image to keep the person centered on the screen, even if they move around the room. The system simulates the movement of a physical camera through digital slices on the high-resolution sensor.

Users also have access to optical and digital zoom presets, with options of 0.6x, 1x and 2x, depending on the device’s hardware. The ultrawide lens can be used to capture multiple people in the same environment or show a wider scene. The transition between lenses occurs fluidly so as not to cause visual discomfort to call participants.

The software update also allows the application of native background blur effects, processed directly by the smartphone’s processor. Essa approach reduces the computer’s processing load by offloading the heavy lifting of graphics rendering to the mobile chip. The result is a more precise cutout around the user, minimizing visual flaws common in PC software filters.

Technical performance on different operating systems

Feature compatibility presents performance variations depending on the computer operating system used by the consumer. On machines equipped with the Windows system, the integration reaches its maximum capacity, allowing video transmission in Full HD resolution with a refresh rate of 60 frames per second. Essa technical specification guarantees a fluidity of movement superior to most dedicated webcams available on the peripheral market. Microsoft collaborated with Samsung to ensure that the operating system recognized the advanced sensors of the Galaxy line without processing bottlenecks.

On the other hand, using the tool on computers with the macOS system has technical limitations established by the Apple software architecture. On Nesses devices, video streaming is restricted to 720p resolution at a rate of 30 frames per second. Despite the resolution limitation, the optical quality of the Samsung’s lenses still provides a superior image in terms of light capture and color fidelity when compared to the integrated cameras of many older notebooks. The South Korean manufacturer reported that it continues to work to optimize communication protocols with the Apple system.

Audio management and hardware protocols

Development of the webcam function in One UI 8.5 required specific technical decisions regarding audio capture during video conferences. The system has been programmed to disable the smartphone’s internal microphones while the device is operating in computer camera mode. Voice capture must be carried out using the microphones of the PC itself, the notebook or headphones connected to the main machine. Essa restriction was implemented by software engineers to avoid chronic feedback, echo and audio feedback problems that occur when multiple microphones are active in the same physical environment. By isolating the cell phone’s function solely for video transmission, the system’s architecture ensures that communication software manages audio centrally, applying its own noise cancellation filters. The measure also simplifies configuration for the end user, who does not need to change sound input and output sources in the complex menus of meeting applications.

Expansion schedule for previous models

The distribution of One UI 8.5 will follow a structured update schedule over the next few months. Após the initial exclusivity on the Galaxy S26 line, the software package will be sent to owners of previous generation devices. The company prioritizes premium segment devices, including foldable smartphones and high-performance tablets.

Later, the functionality will be adapted for mid-range processors, allowing a larger portion of consumers to have access to the tool. The development team performs stability tests on each specific model to ensure that the hardware supports continuous video transmission without overheating. The update notification will automatically appear on compatible devices.

Impact on reducing global e-waste

The integration of advanced functions into existing mobile devices has a direct impact on the IT peripherals consumption chain. By transforming the smartphone into a high-quality webcam, the manufacturer reduces the need to purchase single-use electronic equipment. Essa practice extends the usefulness of mobile hardware and optimizes the resources invested by the consumer.

Experts in technological sustainability point out that the decrease in the purchase of external webcams contributes to the reduction in the volume of electronic waste generated annually. The manufacturing, transportation and disposal of plastic peripherals represent a significant environmental challenge. Using software to maximize the potential of multifunctional devices aligns with global resource efficiency guidelines.

Data transmission security standards

Data communication between the smartphone and the computer takes place using local encrypted protocols via a USB cable. The mobile operating system blocks other applications from accessing the camera while webcam mode is active, ensuring user privacy. Nenhuma image or video is processed on cloud servers while using the tool, keeping the flow of information restricted to the consumer’s physical environment.
