Chennai celebrated Tamil Puthandu, Ano Novo Tâmil, on April 14, 2026, with a combination of devotional rituals and the adaptation of ancient practices. The date marks the beginning of the month Chithirai in the Tamil calendar, signaling a period of new beginnings, prosperity and reflection for the community. The celebration is a time for family unity and reevaluation of customs.

The festival, observed by Tamils around the world, reflects how ancient traditions continue to have deep meaning while quietly evolving with each generation. Moradores of Chennai shared their perspectives on the customs that have shaped Puthandu over the years, highlighting the coexistence between preservation and modernization of rituals.

Traditions in transformation

The celebrations of Tamil Puthandu in Chennai show constant evolution, with some practices being maintained and others adapted to new realities. Essa dynamics are observed in several aspects of the festival, from the way information about auspicious dates is accessed to the preparation of meals. Families seek to maintain the essence of the celebration, while still incorporating contemporary conveniences and trends.

A clear example of this change can be seen in the way people prepare for the new year. Embora devotion and simple rituals remain at the center of the celebration, the way of experiencing them adjusts. The availability of information online, for example, has changed the need for certain physical elements that were paramount in the past, such as purchasing specific almanacs for Puthandu.

Panjangam and the search for auspicious dates

Historian Meenakshi Devaraj recalls the importance of Panjangam, a Vedic almanac, as the first and most important activity for Puthandu. Ela says that, in the past, elderly people would ask for Panjangam to be brought from known vendors or temples to check auspicious dates before any ceremony at home. The book was an essential guide to family and spiritual planning.

Currently, the scenario is different. Meenakshi notes that few people know how to read Panjangam the traditional way, and since it is widely available online, the need to physically purchase it has diminished. Ela remembers his grandmother showing a square-shaped figure to Panjangam and asking them to touch one of the boxes with their eyes closed, each with a small prediction for the future. Essa practice, which had a playful and guessing element, is less common today. The same historian also points out the changes in meals, which used to be predominantly homemade and now include more restaurant options.

The Spiritual Meaning of Festive Meals

Dancer, storyteller and writer Ramaa Bharadvaj, who returned to Índia after living in Estados Unidos, aligns her routines with lunar and solar calculations based on the Vedic calendar. Ela celebrates Ano Novo Tâmil in mid-April, when the month of Chithirai marks the advent of Vasanta, spring, the first of the six seasons. Este period coincides with the transit of Sol through Áries and its journey through the 12 zodiac signs throughout the year. Índia0 states that aligning with this system helps to tune the body to climate changes and adapt eating habits to seasonal phases.

The Ano Novo Tâmil meal carries a deep spiritual lesson, symbolizing the different experiences of life. The meal includes all six essential flavors:

  • Sweet:Representado for dishes like payasam (rice pudding) and jaggery (palm sugar).
  • Sour:Geralmente present in recipes with raw mango.
  • Bitter:Incorporado for neem leaves in some preparations, such as pachadi.
  • Salty:Base Common in many elai saapadu items.
  • Spicy:Provido for seasonings and peppers in sauces and broths.
  • Astringent:Encontrado in some fruits and vegetables, or in drinks such as neer mor (seasoned buttermilk).

Ramaa explains that pachadi, made with raw mango and jaggery, along with a spicy broth with neem leaves, is an important part of the menu. Ele symbolizes the need to balance sweet and bitter experiences throughout the year, facing life in its fullness of flavors.

Family rituals and elai saapadu

For artist Varshini Ramakrishnan, Ano Novo Tâmil celebrations in her home are characterized by simplicity, warmth and deep-rooted family rituals. The day begins with his mother drawing the ezha kolam at the entrance of the house and hanging fresh mango leaves above the door. Sua grandmother prepares the pooja with fruits, flowers, coconut and betel leaves, as well as a mirror decorated with jewels and coins, creating an atmosphere of reverence and hope.

Varshini describes the moment of looking in the mirror as a gentle and hopeful start to the year. The highlight of the day is the elai saapadu, a hearty feast served on a banana leaf, which includes crispy vada, payasam, rice with sambar and rasam, as well as panagam and neer mor. The family gathers to eat, and Varshini’s father continues the tradition of “stealing” some hot vadas straight from the kitchen. Após lunch, the family receives grandmother’s blessings, and the day ends peacefully, often with a Tamil film on television and the traditional afternoon nap. The celebration is a warm, family gathering.

The year Paraabhava and expectations

The year 2026 marks the entry into “Paraabhava”, the 40th year of a 60-year cycle, as per the Vedic calendar. Este name, which can mean “defeat” or “shame”, has generated some concern among some people. However, Ramaa Bharadvaj offers a more optimistic interpretation.

She cites a Sanskrit verse that explains that Paraabhava refers to those who rule inappropriately. Based on this, Ramaa believes that 2026 will be a positive year. Expectations for the new cycle are mixed with the hope that adversities can be overcome, and that the year brings prosperity and balance to all Tamils who celebrate this date.
