Richard Hopkins, former chief of operations at Red Bull and ex-mechanic at McLaren, said on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, that he accepts Corinna Schumacher’s decision to keep her husband’s health private. Michael Schumacher, a seven-time Formula 1 world champion who turned 57, has lived out of public view in Switzerland for about 13 years.

Hopkins built a friendship with the German in the 1990s, when he worked as a mechanic at McLaren. The two used to share coffee in the paddock, the backstage area where the teams work. Hopkins says he misses those moments, but he would see a reunion as positive only if his friend is well.

Hopkins said he would like to see Schumacher again, provided the situation is right. In his view, nobody should want to see him in a condition he would not want to be seen in. If the former driver were not well, Hopkins said he would prefer not to visit.

Why Hopkins believes Corinna is shielding her husband’s image

According to Hopkins, Corinna limits information to protect her husband’s image after the accident that changed the family’s routine. He believes fellow professionals and fans who followed the German’s racing career should not criticize that stance. Hopkins admits he does not know what Corinna thinks, but he believes she is protecting her husband more than herself and the family.

Hopkins said he would rather share a coffee with Schumacher than see him in an unpleasant situation. For him, the family’s decision must be respected. He also describes the seven-time champion as the embodiment of strength.

Memories of Schumacher’s emotional side on and off the track

Hopkins’ recollections of the driver’s behavior gained attention after the world premiere of the documentary Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend, which is distributed in Brazil under the title Schumacher 94: Nasce Uma Lenda. Netflix released the production on Oct. 2, 2026, and Christin Freitag directed it from 1,300 hours of archive footage. The film covers Schumacher’s first of seven world titles, won with Benetton in 1994, a season marked by the deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger at Imola, disqualifications at the British and Belgian rounds, a two-race suspension and the title decider in Adelaide. Corinna also appears in the interviews and recalls the initial resistance of her own mother to the relationship.

Describing the pressure the driver faced at the time, Hopkins said Schumacher showed his feelings openly, especially when he got angry. He said the German was not made of steel and was not a robot, but a human being. The tough side he showed in public sometimes hid a more reserved man behind the scenes.

How a 2013 ski crash in the French Alps kept Schumacher out of sight

The withdrawal began after a severe head injury, which Schumacher suffered when he hit a rock while skiing with his family in the French Alps. He has not fully recovered and continues under care at the family’s mansion in Switzerland. Reports say he uses a wheelchair, but the family strictly controls information about his condition.
