BYD, one of the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturers, has initiated a massive recall of 88,981 units of the Qin Plus DM-i plug-in hybrid sedan. The action was triggered by the detection of a critical defect in the lithium battery module that compromises the safety and operation of cars. The affected vehicles were produced between January 2021 and September 2023.

The recall was officially registered with Administração Estatal of Supervisão of Mercado of China (SAMR), the regulatory body responsible for the quality and safety of products in the country. Segundo official statement, the failure is related to inconsistencies in the manufacturing of the high voltage battery voltage acquisition wire harness. Esse issue can generate incorrect readings from the management system, resulting in loss of power while driving and, in extreme cases, increasing the risk of dangerous thermal events.

Origem of the defect and operational risks

The root of the problem lies in the assembly of the wire harness inside the high voltage battery module. Variações in the manufacturing process can cause abnormal pressure on the component, affecting its durability and the accuracy of information transmitted to the battery management system (BMS).

Over time and continued use, this condition can lead to component degradation, preventing the correct transmission of information about the state of charge and health of the battery cells. The main risk is the sudden cut of power supplied to the electric motor, causing the vehicle to stop unexpectedly, especially dangerous in high-speed situations.

Plano two step action

  • Atualização remote software (OTA) to improve battery management system algorithms and detect anomalies with greater accuracy.
  • Physical Inspeção at authorized dealers, with free replacement of damaged components.
  • Notificação from owners through official channels and the brand’s app.

BYD has assured that all owners of affected vehicles will receive notification in the coming days and will be able to schedule service at dealerships. Software updates can be performed remotely, but physical inspection and possible replacement of parts require a visit to an authorized distributor. The company emphasized that repairs will be completely free.

Histórico recent recalls at BYD

Este is not an isolated case for BYD. In October of the previous year, the manufacturer had already recalled more than 115 thousand units of the Tang DM-i and Yuan Pro models due to potential fire risks related to the battery system. Meses before, in September, another recall involved more than 96 thousand vehicles of the Dolphin and Yuan Plus models due to problems with power converter components that could overheat.

Somados the three recalls in a short period, the number of recalled BYD vehicles exceeds 300 thousand units, reflecting Chinese regulatory authorities’ increasing vigilance on the safety of new energy vehicles.

Regulatory Contexto on China

The Chinese electric vehicle market is the largest in the world, and regulatory oversight by bodies such as SAMR has intensified. The safety of lithium-ion batteries has become a central focus for authorities, with inspections ranging from uniformity of production processes to the integrity of critical management systems to prevent failures.

Grandes manufacturers such as BYD, CATL and CALB are under constant monitoring to ensure that manufacturing processes and quality control meet maximum standards. The Chinese government’s objective is to mitigate risks related to battery technology, strengthen consumer confidence and maintain China’s global leadership in automotive electrification.

Vendas Remain Robust Despite Challenges

Apesar from the recall announcement, BYD sales remain strong. In October, the company recorded global sales of more than 441 thousand units, significant growth compared to the same period of the previous year. Plug-in hybrid models (PHEV) led the performance, with more than 214 thousand units sold, representing an increase of 31 percent.

Sales of 100 percent electric vehicles (BEV) also increased, reaching approximately 223 thousand units. The popularity of hybrid models reflects Chinese consumers’ preference for vehicles that combine electrical efficiency with extended range via an internal combustion engine, consolidating BYD’s leading position in the market.
