Heavy rains leave streets flooded in João Pessoa and Campina Grande

Paraíba faced intense rainfall during Monday and Tuesday, causing widespread flooding in João Pessoa and Campina Grande. In the capital of Paraíba, Defesa Civil recorded an average of 106.7 mm of rain in just two hours. Bairros from Zona Sul were the hardest hit, with the Grotão neighborhood accumulating 142.6mm and Cuiá 114.4mm in the last 12 hours.

The floods generated critical situations in several parts of the city. In the Colinas neighborhood of Sul, passengers on a bus needed to be rescued by Corpo from Bombeiros in a boat. The operation took place after the streets quickly flooded.

Zona Sul of João Pessoa leads in water volume

The precipitation record at Zona Sul and João Pessoa exceeded expectations. Grotão accumulated 142.6 mm of rain in the last 12 hours, while Cuiá recorded 114.4 mm in the same period. Esses numbers place the region among the most affected in the capital.

The Colinas neighborhood of Sul suffered from multiple flooding on its main roads. The waters took over the streets, preventing normal vehicle traffic and isolating residents in their homes. The situation required immediate intervention by Corpo of Bombeiros to rescue trapped people.

Bombeiros’s Corpo was triggered repeatedly during the two days of heavy rain. Em Colinas of Sul, the corporation used boats to rescue bus passengers who were stranded in the middle of the water. Simultaneamente, in the Muçumagro neighborhood, the corporation responded to emergency calls at homes.

The city of Campina Grande also suffered from flooding. In the Cruzeiro neighborhood, the rains left residents stranded inside their homes. The water reached levels that completely blocked access to the streets, preventing the movement of people and vehicles.

Defesa Civil of Estado remains on alert for possible new heavy rain events. Precipitation figures recorded in João Pessoa suggest that the urban drainage system has reached its maximum capacity in several regions. Técnicos analyzes data to develop intervention plans in the most vulnerable areas.
