Cerca of 173 pro-Palestine activists were released in Grécia after their vessels were intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters. Dois men remain in Israel’s custody for questioning. The action occurred Thursday, when a flotilla of 22 boats carrying humanitarian supplies was detained near the island of Creta.

Greek authorities received the passengers at the port on the south coast of Creta. The group will travel to Heraklion, where they will await arrangements to return to their home countries. Ônibus were positioned to transport the activists and facilitate the arrival of more vessels from Barcelona, Valência and Italian ports.

Dois detained in Israel face charges

Saif Abu Keshek and Thiago Ávila remain in prison on separate charges. The Israeli government classified the first as a suspect in connection with a terrorist organization. Ávila is investigated for illegal activity, according to Israeli authorities. Ambos were transported to the country for interrogation procedures, according to official statements.

Flotilha Global Sumud demanded the immediate release of the two men. The group denounced the detention as an illegal kidnapping and requested international pressure from governments on the Israeli regime. Human rights Organizações criticized the activists’ retention without initial formal charges.

Operação in international waters generates controversy

Israel justified the interception by stating the need to avoid non-compliance with the legal block. Ministério of the Israeli Relações Exteriores declared that the action took place peacefully with no fatalities. Autoridades Israelis found materials on the boats that they classified as contraceptives and possible drugs, although they did not release technical details about the seizures.

Flotilha Global Sumud disputed the official narrative. Segundo the group, Israeli naval forces disabled vessels, destroyed engines and blocked communications during a “violent attack” in waters more than 600 miles away from Gaza. The organization accuses Israel of intentionally abandoning civilians on damaged vessels as a storm approached the region.

Espanha and Itália harshly criticized the operation. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said his government was doing “everything necessary to protect and assist detained Spaniards.” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni demanded the immediate release of all intercepted Italians, calling Israeli actions a violation of international law.

Contexto of the flotilla and stated objectives

The expedition included 58 vessels originally departing Espanha, França and Itália two weeks ago. The stated objective was to break the Israeli blockade of Faixa and Gaza and press for the opening of a permanent humanitarian corridor. Trinta and six additional boats remained close to the south shore of Creta on Friday.

Organizers seek to intensify international pressure on governments and companies seen as complicit in implementing the blockade. Flotilha Global Sumud argues that the action constitutes a coordinated challenge to what it classifies as “illegal blocking” of Israel.

Precedente occurred last October when Israel impeded previous flotilla. At the time, more than 470 people were arrested and deported, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. The Israeli government classified that action as an operational success against a “political marketing maneuver”.

Posição International and US Backed

Os Estados Unidos supported the Israeli decision to intercept the boats. American Estado spokesman Departamento called the flotilla a “senseless political maneuver.” The Trump administration officially supports Israel’s security actions in the region.

Israel insists that its operations comply with international law and are necessary to maintain security. Ministério of the Israeli Relações Exteriores accuses the flotilla organizers of joining forces with Hamas to sabotage the transition of the presidential peace plan to the second phase. Segundo the Israeli authorities, the action also aims to divert attention from Hamas’s refusal to disarm in accordance with agreements.

Cogat, the Israeli defense agency that controls land crossings for Gaza, stated that Israel facilitates the entry of humanitarian aid. Segundo official statement, there is no limit to the amount of supplies that can enter the territory. Dados from the Israeli government contrast with reports from international humanitarian organizations.

Humanitarian Situação on Gaza remains critical

The population of 2.1 million faces dire humanitarian conditions despite some recent improvements. A senior Organização official from Nações Unidas stated that continued and deadly Israeli attacks have combined with the collapse of essential services. Secretário-General Adjunto Khaled Khiari warned that water, sanitation and health are once again approaching total collapse.

Segurança feeding remains a critical challenge. Especialistas of Classificação Integrada of Fases of Segurança Alimentar confirmed the existence of a famine in Gaza last August. Previsões indicated a reduction in the population facing catastrophic conditions from 100,000 to 1,900 by mid-April, in accordance with ceasefire agreements implemented in December.

The war in Gaza was triggered by Hamas’s attack south of Israel on October 7, 2023. Cerca’s 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage in that action. The Israeli military response has resulted in more than 72,600 deaths according to local health agencies, with 824 deaths recorded since the start of the ceasefire agreed as part of the American presidential peace plan.
