Meta announced the removal of one of WhatsApp’s visual features that has been present on the platform since the end of 2022. Digital avatars, created as miniature versions of users and inspired by the metaverse, will be completely disabled in future updates of the application. WABetaInfo identified a new information card displayed on WhatsApp alerting users about the end of the feature, which began with the deactivation of the editing function.

The company did not disclose an exact deadline for completing the removal. Porém, many users already see warnings in the application. Quando deactivation is complete, you will not be able to create, edit or share avatars with others through the platform.

Cronograma deprecation and affected features

Avatars functioned as a complement to traditional profile photos. Quando a user created an avatar, it appeared on the profile screen as a second visual option, leaving the profile photo as the main element. The feature has also been integrated into WhatsApp stickers, allowing users to share avatar versions of their stickers.

Meta indicated that both profile avatars and related stickers will be removed. Contudo, the company has not set specific dates for these exclusions. Default profile photos will not change and will remain functional.

Origem of the resource within the virtual reality strategy

The feature was born out of Meta’s initiative to expand its virtual reality avatars beyond Quest, its VR headset platform. The company sought to improve digital visuals by offering WhatsApp users the ability to create customizable graphic representations. The strategy reflected Meta’s corporate investment in the concept of the metaverse as a multiplatform immersive environment.

Desde its launch in 2022, avatars gained space in WhatsApp’s visual communication. Usuários could customize them with different appearances, styles and accessories. Contudo, the lack of prioritization announced now suggests a change in Meta’s strategy regarding this type of cosmetic feature.

Impacto for Users and Future Outlook

Milhões users who have invested time in creating and customizing their avatars will see these elements disappear. The removal will not affect already sent messages that contain avatars, but new creations and edits will no longer be allowed. Usuários who used avatars as stickers will also lose access to this functionality.

Meta remains confidential about the exact reasons for the discontinuation. Relatos indicate that the feature did not achieve expected levels of engagement, leading the company to redirect efforts to other priorities. WhatsApp will focus its development on features focused on communication, security and integration of artificial intelligence.

The news reflects a larger trend: Tech companies often test experimental features and discontinue them when they fail to meet success metrics. In the case of WhatsApp avatars, the initiative proved to be less crucial than other innovations planned by Meta for its platforms:

  • Novos augmented reality filters for app camera
  • Artificial Intelligence Enhanced Integração for Answer Suggestions
  • Group Call Features Expansão
  • Melhorias in the security and privacy system

Contexto biggest of Meta’s product changes

Esse move aligns with broader adjustments to Meta’s priorities. The company reviewed its investments in metaverse and virtual reality after significant infrastructure spending did not generate expected returns. The discontinuation of cosmetic features like avatars represents part of this recalibration.

WhatsApp remains constantly evolving, with Meta regularly testing new features in beta versions. Alguns features advance to general users while others are dropped. Avatars now follow the deprecation path, freeing up development capacity for priorities considered more strategic.

Usuários who created avatars should expect additional notifications when Meta confirms exact dates for complete removal. Até there functionality remains accessible for editing, although new users will also receive the same warnings about impending discontinuation.
