The joint venture between Chery and Jaguar Land Rover presented the Concept 97, the first model of the new Freelander sub-brand with an independent identity. The sports utility vehicle was revealed at China and marks the return of a historic name with a proposal entirely focused on sustainable mobility. The project combines the Chinese technological base with British design and state-of-the-art electrified propulsion systems, positioning itself as a premium alternative in the new energy vehicle segment.

Modular Plataforma and electrified motorization

The new Freelander uses the T1X modular platform adapted for new energy vehicles, offering technical flexibility for different propulsion configurations. The model will have 100% electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid options with range extender (EREV), serving different consumer profiles. The digital architecture will be equipped with high-performance Qualcomm processors, ensuring fast data processing and advanced systems integration.

  • Plataforma T1X with 800V high voltage for ultra-fast recharges.
  • Parceria with CATL for batteries with higher energy density.
  • Sistema Huawei Qiankun integrating high-resolution sensors.
  • 896-line LiDAR radar for millimetric mapping of the terrain.

The 800V platform is a competitive differentiator, allowing ultra-fast recharges that are essential for the electrical segment. Collaboration with battery supplier CATL ensures extended autonomy for the all-electric versions. The Huawei Qiankun system integrates high-resolution sensors and 896-line LiDAR radar, significantly raising the level of driving safety and automation.

Robust Design rescuing historical legacy

The look of the Freelander Concept 97 draws direct inspiration from the first generation launched in the 1990s, featuring straight lines and a square silhouette that reinforce its robustness. The design was developed at Jaguar Land Rover’s global hub at Inglaterra, respecting the brand’s legacy while introducing modern elements. Conjuntos high-definition LED optics, wide fenders and flat roof give the model an imposing presence, differentiating it from the more fluid lines of the current Range Rover family.

The interior reveals a minimalist environment with large suspended digital screens, following the digitalization trend in the Asian market. Essa approach aims to attract young consumers and managers looking for total connectivity and a vehicle capable of moving between urban use and light off-road forays. The new Freelander brand will be positioned between Chery’s entry-level models and Jaguar Land Rover’s luxury vehicles, offering a premium product with a focus on technology.

Advanced Sensores and real-time terrain awareness

The Concept 97 stands out for integrating dual-lens cameras for active ground perception while driving. Esse system works in conjunction with the adaptive suspension to adjust the vehicle’s response as road irregularities are detected by sensors. Onboard artificial intelligence processes data in real time, optimizing energy consumption and occupant comfort in different weather and driving conditions.

The integration of cutting-edge Chinese technology with British suspension engineering promises superior driving dynamics to direct competitors. The focus on new energy vehicles allows the Freelander to offer instant torque and quiet operation, features valued in dense urban centers. With the E0X platform also being considered for future variations, the hardware ecosystem will be one of the most flexible in its category.

Dimensões generous and production strategy

The new Freelander is approximately 5.1 meters long, placing it in a superior category in terms of internal space. The 2+2+2 seating configuration is designed to offer maximum comfort, especially on long-distance journeys. The trunk and internal storage solutions were optimized to serve families who require versatility and practicality in their everyday lives.

Production will take place at the Changshu manufacturing unit, the result of collaboration that began in 2012. The launch of Freelander as an independent brand is part of a profound restructuring of Jaguar Land Rover’s operations into China, filling the production capacity left by the discontinuation of Discovery Sport and Evoque by the end of 2026. The unification of components with the Discovery Sport and Evoque product line Chery allows a significant reduction in production and maintenance costs, making the vehicle more affordable without giving up its premium status. Inicialmente, sales will be concentrated in Chinese territory through an exclusive distribution network, separate from traditional JLR dealerships.
