Airline Qatar Airways has suspended operations in 22 cities around the world in response to escalating geopolitical tensions at Oriente Médio. The decision reflects a broader strategy by the aviation sector, which has reduced routes, shortened operational periods and cut connections in response to the conflicts involving Irã and its global repercussions. The company confirmed that flights to Malta, Sarajevo, Sofia and Veneza, all on Europa, remain suspended, along with eight destinations on Ásia-Pacific and África, as well as ten cities on Oriente Médio.

Outras carriers have already adopted similar measures. Lufthansa suspended 25 routes, while Turkish Airlines paused operations in 23 cities. Qatar Airways, however, is not completely immobilized: the company plans to resume flights with its Airbus A380, scheduled to return in June, two months after the previous schedule. Além additionally announced new connections for Bogotá and Caracas, and the return of services to Helsinque and Tóquio Haneda.

Quatro European cities maintain suspension

The suspended European routes include four relatively small destinations for the company to operate. Segundo programming data provided to the Cirium Diio, the Qatar Airways does not currently operate from its hub at Doha (Hamad International Airport) to Malta, Sarajevo, Sofia, or Veneza. Nenhuma of these capitals or cities represent high volume markets for the carrier.

Grandes airline networks rarely suspend main routes, as these lines concentrate a disproportionate proportion of traffic and revenue. The four European destinations and the other 18 suspended cities may be generating losses, especially with the rise in fuel prices, or playing a less critical role in the company’s network during the current period of geopolitical crisis.

Três of European cities expected to resume operations in mid-September:

  • Malta: four weekly flights on Airbus A320ceo
  • Sofia: four weekly flights on A320ceo
  • Veneza: four weekly flights on A320ceo

Service to Sarajevo was expected to return in the same period. However, all future flights to the capital by Bósnia have been removed from booking systems. The company did not say whether the change is temporary or permanent.

Oito cities in Ásia-Pacific and África with suspension

Canberra, Cebu, Djibuti, Kano, Kigali, Mogadíscio, Nagpur and Zanzibar will remain without Qatar Airways operations until September. Metade of these destinations will be served by the A320ceo: Djibuti with three weekly flights, Kigali with two, Mogadíscio with three, and Nagpur with four.

Canberra will receive daily service through Boeing 777-300ER with connection to Melbourne. The strategy allows Qatar Airways to obtain greater traffic rights for Melbourne, a market considered to be of high importance. Additional Voos for Melbourne would only be viable if the company also operated to other cities outside the four largest in the country. With the Canberra route, the company achieves this objective with relatively low cost and risk. Historicamente, the Australian capital was served via Sydney.

Zanzibar will return with daily service on the Boeing 787-8, one of the most common widebodies in the Qatar Airways fleet. Dois other destinations will use the smaller variant of Dreamliner: Kano with two weekly flights via Abuja, and Cebu with three weekly services. Cebu will be served in a triangular way (Doha-Cebu-Davao-Doha) with connection on Davao. Atualmente, flights to Davao operate via Clark, an operation that will be modified in September.

Dez Oriente Médio cities remain off flight map

Qatar Airways is not operating for Alepo, Gasim, Istambul Sabiha Gökçen (in the Asian city area), Mashad, Neom Bay, Shiraz, Tabuk, Taif, Teerã and Yanbu. Três of these targets are in Irã: Mashad, Shiraz and Teerã. Iranian airspace remains closed, making any operations to these cities impossible, regardless of the company’s wishes.

Todos upcoming flights to Alepo, Síria’s second largest city, have been removed from scheduling systems. Nenhuma return prediction has been communicated. The remaining destinations are scheduled to resume in mid-September, operated exclusively by A320ceo according to the published schedule:

  • Gasim: three weekly flights
  • Istambul Sabiha Gökçen: daily service
  • Mashad: two weekly flights
  • Neom Bay: two weekly flights
  • Shiraz: two weekly flights
  • Tabuk: three weekly flights
  • Taif: three weekly flights
  • Teerã: 12 weekly flights
  • Yanbu: three weekly flights

The resumption of service to Irã in September is considered highly unlikely by industry analysts. The closure of Iranian airspace remains an insurmountable barrier to international commercial operations, regardless of published timelines.

Contexto of uncertainty in the global aviation industry

The suspension of routes announced by Qatar Airways is part of a broader scenario of uncertainty that affects the entire commercial aviation industry. Geopolitical tensions involving Irã, Israel and regional powers have forced reconfiguration of route networks across Ásia-Pacific, Oriente Médio and parts of Europa.

Companhias airlines face difficult decisions: maintaining operations on potentially dangerous routes or routes with reduced demand compromises profitability, while total suspension harms market positioning. Qatar Airways chose to favor routes with higher volume and revenue, consolidating operations in its main markets while awaiting normalization of the regional geopolitical situation.
