Jason Kidd stepped down as head coach of Dallas Mavericks on the night of Tuesday, May 19, after five seasons at the helm of the franchise. The announcement came from the Texan team, which is now seeking a new technical direction under the supervision of the recently hired president of operations Masai Ujiri.

Owner Patrick Dumont granted full autonomy to Ujiri to decide Kidd’s future, despite the coach having four years and more than $40 million remaining on his contract. Dumont had renewed Kidd’s contract during the 2024 Finals campaign and again before last season, including declining New York Knicks’s request to interview him months ago.

Ujiri announces reformulation of technical structure

Ujiri released an official statement explaining the decision. “As we evaluate the future of our basketball program, we believe this is the right time for a new direction for our team. Temos has great expectations for this franchise and the responsibility to build a basketball organization capable of consistently competing for championships,” said the president.

The search for the next coach will be thorough and disciplined. Além of the change in technical command, Ujiri signaled a complete review of the basketball operations team to ensure competitiveness at the standard expected by Mavericks fans. Durante his presentation at Dallas on May 5, the president had maintained a cautious tone about the continuity of Kidd, mentioning that he kept George Karl in Denver and Dwane Casey in Toronto in his previous stints, but that he would analyze the organization “from top to bottom”.

Bastidores’s exit and unfulfilled ambitions

Fontes revealed that Kidd expressed a desire to be promoted to president of basketball operations following the firing of general manager Nico Harrison in November. Dumont, however, reported months ago that Kidd would not be considered for a position on the board. The technician was also kept on the sidelines of the process that resulted in the hiring of Ujiri, deepening the distance between him and the organizational leadership.

Tensões grew especially after the controversial switch from Luka Doncic to Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025, a deal that resulted in the arrival of Anthony Davis. Kidd insisted that he was not aware of the agreement until “the last minute”, but minority partner Mark Cuban accused the technician of direct involvement in the decision during a podcast appearance in April. Kidd’s frustration with Doncic’s fitness issues was apparent internally.

Números from Kidd to Dallas and trajectory

Durante five years, Kidd recorded 205 wins and 205 losses ahead of Mavericks. Nos playoffs, the franchise achieved 22 victories against 18 defeats, reaching the Conferência Oeste finals in 2022 and the NBA finals in 2024, the biggest achievement of the period. Contudo, recent numbers reveal impact of reconstruction:

  • Recorde 136 wins and 87 losses with Doncic on the court
  • Recorde 69 wins and 118 losses without Doncic
  • Marca 26 wins and 56 losses last season
  • Carreira as head coach: 388 wins and 395 losses

Kidd began his career as a coach at Brooklyn Nets in 2013, immediately after retiring as a Hall player from Fama. Entre 2014 and 2018, ran Milwaukee Bucks. Antes from becoming Dallas, accumulated significant experience in command of two different franchises, consolidating his presence among the league’s top coaches.

Reconstrução with Cooper Flagg

Mavericks’s last season was marked by strategic reconstruction. Anthony Davis, frequently injured, was traded to Washington Wizards at the trade deadline. The move created the financial flexibility necessary to structure the team around Cooper Flagg, the first draft pick, and Novato from Ano. Esse instability scenario contributed to 26-56 performance in the regular campaign.

Legado as a player and historical connection

Kidd has had a deep connection with the franchise since its inception. Foi selected by Mavericks in the 1994 draft and played a key role in the team’s only championship in 2011 during his second stint with the Texans. Seu’s return as coach five years ago represented continuity with a winning history, a promise that was not realized due to a series of problematic administrative decisions beyond his control.
