Coach Jason Kidd leaves the Mavericks after five years leading the franchise

Jason Kidd stepped down as head coach of Dallas Mavericks on the night of Tuesday, May 19, after five seasons at the helm of the franchise. The announcement came from the Texan team, which is now seeking a new technical direction under the supervision of the recently hired president of operations Masai Ujiri.

Owner Patrick Dumont granted full autonomy to Ujiri to decide Kidd’s future, despite the coach having four years and more than $40 million remaining on his contract. Dumont had renewed Kidd’s contract during the 2024 Finals campaign and again before last season, including declining New York Knicks’s request to interview him months ago.

Ujiri announces reformulation of technical structure

Ujiri released an official statement explaining the decision. “As we evaluate the future of our basketball program, we believe this is the right time for a new direction for our team. Temos has great expectations for this franchise and the responsibility to build a basketball organization capable of consistently competing for championships,” said the president.

The search for the next coach will be thorough and disciplined. Além of the change in technical command, Ujiri signaled a complete review of the basketball operations team to ensure competitiveness at the standard expected by Mavericks fans. Durante his presentation at Dallas on May 5, the president had maintained a cautious tone about the continuity of Kidd, mentioning that he kept George Karl in Denver and Dwane Casey in Toronto in his previous stints, but that he would analyze the organization “from top to bottom”.

Fontes revealed that Kidd expressed a desire to be promoted to president of basketball operations following the firing of general manager Nico Harrison in November. Dumont, however, reported months ago that Kidd would not be considered for a position on the board.
