Mais 15 years after one of cinema’s most peculiar stories, Peter Jackson has finally broken his silence. The filmmaker took full responsibility for Ryan Gosling’s dismissal from the cast of “Um Olhar do Paraíso” (2009), during an interview on this year’s Festival de Cannes, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

The situation originated in 2010, when Gosling revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he had gained 27 kilograms for the role, without first talking to Jackson, who was busy in other phases of pre-production. Upon arriving on set with the physical transformation complete, the director disapproved of the actor’s choice.

Jackson’s acknowledgment of casting failure

Jackson was specifically asked about the firing during the French festival. Embora refused to comment on isolated examples of actors, the filmmaker was clear in assuming full responsibility. “I’m not going to talk about specific examples of actors because that’s something personal and private, and it’s not their fault,” he explained. “Whenever we replace an actor, it’s actually our fault because we didn’t get the casting right and we cast the wrong person in the role.”

The director emphasized that decisions to remove an actor never reflect the professional’s failures, but rather production errors:

  • Falta successful in initial casting choice
  • Incompatibilidade between the actor and the project as a whole
  • Ausência alignment during the pre-production process
  • Erro communication between management and interpreter

Como Jackson described the situation with Gosling

The filmmaker took time to praise Ryan Gosling’s work in general. “Ryan is a fantastic actor, as we all know,” stated Jackson. Ele explained that the incompatibility goes beyond performance: “Movies depend on chemistry, both on camera and behind the scenes.”

Jackson explored the complexity of building a cohesive cast. Choosing actors involves multiple layers: the transmission that the actor offers to the audience, the way in which he integrates into the work group, his connection with the story and the character. The filmmaker recognized that, despite all the planning and effort to achieve this harmony, mistakes happen. “Normally, you put a lot of effort into planning the film and casting to get that right, but sometimes we make our own mistakes,” he concluded.

Gosling sums up the situation with humor

The actor himself had summed up the experience in a good-humored way years before. “I just showed up on set and had it all wrong. Daí I was fat and unemployed,” Gosling said in 2010, reflecting on the misunderstanding that led him to gain weight without guidance from production.

The transformation was so significant that the actor underwent a radical body change for a role he would never play. The physical effort, carried out without prior communication with the director, resulted in one of the most unusual moments of Gosling’s career.

What happened to Gosling’s role

Mark Wahlberg ended up taking on the role of Jack Salmon, father of the central character Susie. The film follows Susie Salmon, a young woman murdered by a neighbor while walking home, who ends up in a place between heaven and hell. From there, she watches her parents deal with the aftermath of her death.

The production, despite the setback with Gosling, was launched and marked another step in the career of the director known for the franchise “O Senhor dos Anéis”. Para Gosling, the situation became an anecdote within a CV full of memorable roles, even though this one in particular never made it to the screen with his participation.
