The Volkswagen presents the Tukan pickup truck, a model fully developed and manufactured in the Brasil that arrives in 2027 to compete for space with the Fiat Strada and contain the advance of Chinese brands. The vehicle will be produced in the São José of the Pinhais, in the Paraná, with 76% nationalization of parts and promises to transform the brand’s strategy in the compact and medium pickup truck segment in the country.

The new Tukan represents a significant change in the industrial posture of the Volkswagen. Construída on the MQB platform, the pickup truck will be present in a category where the Fiat dominates with models like the Strada and Toro, while facing increasing pressure from Chinese electrification, especially BYD.

Plataforma and 100% Brazilian production

The Tukan design is based on the MQB architecture, specifically adapted for a pickup truck with a robust and work-oriented proposal. Volkswagen states that development will occur entirely on the Brasil, positioning the model as a showcase for local technology at a critical time of competition with Oriente manufacturers.

The 76% nationalization points to deep integration of the Brazilian production chain. Local Fornecedores will participate in commercial-scale manufacturing, reducing dependence on imports and consolidating Tukan as a genuinely national product.

Robust, load-focused Suspensão

The biggest technical difference of the Tukan is in the rear suspension. The model will use a rigid axle with a leaf spring, a solution far removed from the old Saveiro, which had a torsion axis and helical springs. Essa configuration brings the new pickup closer to the Fiat Strada and reinforces the proposed resistance and load capacity.

The rear drum brake complements the strategy aimed at work vehicles. The architectural choice signals that the Volkswagen does not compete for urban refinement, but for the functionality and durability demanded by professionals.

Motor flex and light electrification 48V

The Tukan line will have two engine levels. The entry-level versions will use a 170 horsepower 1.0 TSI engine with 16.8 kgfm of torque, coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Essa configuration caters to price-sensitive consumers, a segment where competition intensifies.

The superior versions will have a 1.5 turbo flex engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system. Esse set places the Volkswagen on the same trajectory that the Fiat is already on with its national light hybrids, responding directly to BYD’s electrified offensive. Light electrification in volume pickups represents a differentiated strategy in the Brazilian market.

Especificações techniques summarized

Information confirmed by Volkswagen indicates:

  • Plataforma MQB adapted for heavy use
  • Nacionalização of 76% of parts
  • Motor 1.0 TSI with 116 hp as entry
  • Motor 1.5 turbo flex with MHEV 48V on top
  • Câmbio 6-speed automatic
  • Suspensão rear on rigid axle with leaf springs
  • Freio drum rear
  • Produção in São José of Pinhais

Disputa triple in the pickup truck segment

Tukan enters a fragmented and competitive market. The Fiat Strada remains a direct rival due to its proximity to segment and price, while the Toro offers a larger and more sophisticated alternative within the Italian portfolio. The Chevrolet Montana remains a competitor in the entry-level range, and affordable versions of the Toro itself share space with consumers looking for capacity on a controlled budget.

Chinese pressure comes from manufacturers like BYD who are moving forward with aggressive electrification. Volkswagen recognizes this threat by integrating a mild-hybrid system into premium versions, anticipating market migration to more efficient technologies with less environmental impact.

Estratégia shared between Volkswagen and Fiat

Volkswagen and Fiat now converge on a similar defensive strategy. Ambas bets on local production, flex engines, light electrification and prices aligned with Brazilian economic reality. Essa approximation of routes suggests that traditional competitors are tacitly uniting against the common threat represented by the Chinese companies’ productive and financial capacity.

The launch of the Tukan in 2027 will mark the return of the Volkswagen to the compact pickup truck segment with significant volume ambitions. The model succeeds the Saveiro but with greater aspirations, seeking to win over consumers who migrate to medium segments without abandoning the proposal of utility and practicality.
