Mercedes presents AMG GT EV with 1,153 hp, acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 2 seconds
Mercedes revealed at Los Angeles the new four-door AMG GT Coupé, the AMG division’s first fully electric vehicle. The top-of-the-line model, designated GT 63, reaches 1,153 horsepower in Race mode with launch control activated above 80% load, surpassing the extinct AMG ONE hybrid that had 1,049 hp. The coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 300 km/h, setting new performance records for the German brand.
The available power marks a significant transformation in Mercedes’s electrical strategy, which faced resistance from its conservative customers against elements such as aerodynamic cooling grilles. The challenge was to reconcile the emotional experience associated with old V8 engines with the immediate performance of electric traction. Para so much, the manufacturer implemented a complex system of simulated sounds, virtual nine-speed transmission, vibrations in the seats and fake rev counter that reproduce characteristics of combustion engines.
Tecnologia innovative in motors and battery
The three axial flux motors represent a notable advance in automotive electrification. Cada unit measures less than 8.9 inches thick — 67% smaller than conventional radial-flow units — and delivers double the torque density and triple the power density. Mercedes acquired YASA in 2021, the company that developed this technology, which also supplied engines for very high-performance hybrids such as the Koenigsegg Regera, Ferrari SF90 and Lamborghini Revuelto.
The configuration distributes one engine on the front axle and two on the rear. The total electrical architecture is capable of generating up to 1,300 hp, indicating potential for even more powerful future models. The entry-level GT 55 model offers 805 horsepower, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.4 seconds with a top speed of 260 km/h.
Accelerated Carregamento and autonomy
The native 800-volt battery system allows charging at up to 800 amps on same-voltage chargers, generating recharge power in excess of 600 kilowatts — faster than virtually any alternative currently available. The 106 kilowatt-hour battery charges from 10% to 80%, adding approximately 450 kilometers of range in approximately 11 minutes. Reduzindo voltage to 400 volts, maximum charging reaches 320 kilowatts, maintaining extremely accelerated charging curve even on 200 kilowatt chargers. Total range according to the WLTP cycle varies between 371 and 435 miles, although these figures are preliminary.
Innovation also permeates cell chemistry. The system uses a silicon anode coupled to an NMCA cathode, a technology that improves energy density without compromising the ability to recharge quickly. Cada battery holds 2,660 cells measuring 105 millimeters high by 26 millimeters in diameter, a format customized exclusively for this model. The positioning at the base of the vehicle includes cut-out spaces for the rear passengers’ feet, allowing for greater comfort and enabling a lower seat.
Dinâmica driving and selectable modes
Sete preset plus one customizable drive modes modify various aspects of performance, including transmission response, handling and drivetrains. Race mode completely disables gear and noise simulations, offering pure linear acceleration from the electric motor. Sport+ mode activates the simulated V8 sound system with nine-speed virtual automatic transmission operable via steering wheel paddles. The standard air suspension adjusts height according to speed.
Active aerodynamics features modify airflow at the base of the body, rear spoiler, air intakes and rear diffuser to optimize performance at high speeds. Mercedes claims that the active rear diffuser is a world first. Três physical buttons on the center console control driving characteristics via the “AMG Race Engineer” system, allowing quick adjustment of response, agility and traction without needing to navigate on-screen menus.
Interior and practical usability
The dashboard focuses on two screens for the driver and one for the passenger, eliminating traditional physical controls for air conditioning and volume — the latter controlled by a button on the steering wheel. The optional head-up display (HUD) offers race analysis tools such as timing of pre-programmed sectors on world-famous circuits and works even with polarized sunglasses, a rare feature on the market.
The seats have reinforced side supports for aggressive maneuvers. A three-passenger rear seat is optional, with the center seat featuring reduced legroom compared to the four-seat configuration. The most notable architectural element is the panoramic electrochromic glass roof surrounded by ambient lighting that switches between opaque and transparent modes in various patterns, although the lights function solely as a visual effect without providing navigation information or alerts.
