Russian automaker AvtoVAZ presented the prototype of its new compact sports utility vehicle during the international fair Innoprom Ásia Central 2026. The industrial event takes place in the city of Tashkent, capital of Uzbequistão, between April 20th and 22nd. The unprecedented model was named Lada Azimut and occupied the central space at the stand of the state corporation Rostec. The exhibition marks the vehicle’s first public appearance outside Russian territory, attracting the attention of investors and representatives of the automotive sector.
The project represents the future flagship of the manufacturer’s assembly line and was developed entirely by local engineers. The presentation on the Asian market serves as a strategic publicity stage before the start of series production. The compact crossover segment records high demand in the region, motivating the choice of location for the unveiling. Executivos from the company took advantage of the fair to prospect commercial partnerships and assess the foreign public’s receptivity to the brand’s new design.
Estrutura reinforced and adapted for uneven terrain
The development of the Lada Azimut used as a basis the vehicle architecture of the Vesta model, already consolidated in the automaker’s portfolio. The designers applied structural reinforcements to the chassis to withstand the mechanical demands of a sports utility vehicle. The suspension underwent specific calibration to deal with potholes and unpaved roads. Ground clearance reaches 208 millimeters in the most complete versions. Essa technical feature facilitates safe crossing of urban and rural obstacles.
The engineering team designed almost a thousand new or revised components exclusively for the execution of this project. The development work covered the body stamping, interior finishing and electronic architecture of the car. The exterior design features straight lines and smooth surfaces that convey a robust visual identity. The manufacturer sought to balance modern aesthetics with the functionality demanded by consumers in this niche market. The vehicle has five doors and accommodates five passengers, offering a trunk with volume sized for daily use and long trips.
Pacote technological and list of standard equipment
The automaker decided to raise the standard of finishing and onboard technology compared to previous products in the Lada line. The cabin received better quality materials and an improved assembly process. The instrument panel uses a fully digital screen that can be configured by the driver. The center of the dashboard houses the main multimedia system, equipped with a 10-inch touch-sensitive display. The air conditioning’s physical controls remain separate from the digital interface to facilitate tactile operation during highway driving.
The catalog of convenience and safety items planned for launch includes technologies that were previously rare in the Russian manufacturer’s entry-level cars. The list of equipment confirmed by the company for the top versions includes the following features:
- Conjunto full LED front and rear optics.
- Sistema wireless charging for smartphones in the center console.
- Teto panoramic solar panel with electric drive and protective curtain.
- Ar-automatic conditioning with climate control of two independent zones.
- High-resolution Câmeras with 360-degree vision for maneuver assistance.
The integration of all these systems required a complete upgrade of the vehicle’s electrical network. AvtoVAZ carried out rigorous electromagnetic compatibility tests to ensure the simultaneous operation of the comfort and safety modules. The brand’s commercial objective is to attract a buyer profile that seeks technological convenience without having to migrate to higher-cost premium brands.
Opções engine and plans for turbo thruster
The initial sales schedule foresees the offering of two naturally aspirated gasoline engines, both already known by mechanics in the region. The entry-level engine has a displacement of 1.6 liters and delivers 120 horsepower. The intermediate option uses a 1.8 liter block capable of generating 132 horsepower. Customers will be able to choose between a six-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic transmission. The powertrains have undergone recent updates to reduce fuel consumption and meet environmental standards in force in 2026.
The company’s strategic planning includes the introduction of a more powerful variant in a second phase of the product’s life cycle. Engineers are preparing a 1.5-liter engine equipped with a turbocharger, designed to produce approximately 150 horsepower. Esta mechanical configuration will work in conjunction with a classic automatic transmission, equipped with a torque converter. The adoption of the turbo system aims to improve overtaking performance and adapt the car to the preferences of markets with hilly topography.
Cronograma production and modernization of the industrial complex
The manufacturing of the new sports utility vehicle will take place in the historic Togliatti industrial complex, located in the Samara region. AvtoVAZ management approved a specific budget to modernize local assembly lines. Work to adapt the manufacturing infrastructure will begin in May 2026. The process involves the installation of new welding robots and the reconfiguration of the parts transport conveyors. The technological update will make it possible to increase the production rate and maintain the quality standard required by the project.
The prototype exhibited at Uzbequistão reflects the advanced stage of engineering maturation. The automaker has already built dozens of pre-series units that run camouflaged in intensive durability tests. Street evaluations check the behavior of the suspension, the efficiency of the brakes and the cabin’s sealing against dust and water. The government certification and safety approval process is expected to end in the spring of the northern hemisphere.
Large-scale production is officially scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026. The name Azimut, chosen to name the car, resulted from an internal competition that mobilized factory employees. The judging panel analyzed almost 50,000 suggestions sent by workers before defining the winner. The word refers to the idea of constant movement, precise navigation and discovery of new paths.
Estratégia commercial and expansion in the Asian market
Participation in the Innoprom Ásia Central fair highlights AvtoVAZ’s intention to diversify its consumer markets. Uzbequistão and neighboring countries have a fleet that is undergoing renewal and a growing middle class. Esse scenario creates an environment conducive to the introduction of vehicles with a focus on cost-benefit. The manufacturer plans to establish local distribution networks and authorized maintenance centers to ensure after-sales support for new customers in the Asian region.
The Lada Azimut represents the first completely new sports utility vehicle launched by the brand in several decades. The company focused its efforts on this specific niche due to the global change in driver preferences, who began to look for cars with a higher driving position. The automaker’s management did not disclose the official price list during the exhibition at Tashkent. Analistas from the automotive market projects that the initial values will position the vehicle competitively against imported models that currently compete in the same segment.
