Forgetting the password of a smartphone can turn an essential device into a useless object. Google, Samsung and Apple offer recovery tools, and in many cases the owner can unlock the phone without visiting a technical service. Each method, however, has its own requirements, and some of them erase the data stored on the device.

Human memory does not always keep up with the security rules that phones demand. Millions of users struggle to remember complex codes, and the success of a recovery depends on the internet connection, on accounts set up in advance and on the model of the device.

How Android phones are unlocked

Android phones, sold by brands such as Xiaomi, Motorola and Oppo, offer practical solutions, but most of them involve a factory reset that wipes all stored data. The main remote tool is Google’s Find My Device service, which lets the owner locate, lock or erase the phone. It only works if the device is online and linked to a Google account.

To unlock online, the user opens the platform, selects the option to erase the device and confirms with the account credentials. The process is quick but cannot be undone, and it removes photos, apps and settings. Users without internet access can perform a manual reset by turning off the phone and pressing the Power and Volume- buttons together until the recovery menu appears. In that menu, the option “wipe data/factory reset” restores the original settings, and the process may take several minutes.

  • Back up the data before resetting, when possible.
  • The online method depends on a stable internet connection on the device.
  • Some models use different button combinations to open recovery mode.

Samsung’s remote unlock keeps most data

Samsung offers an alternative that, in many cases, avoids deleting all data. The Find My Mobile service allows remote unlocking, provided the phone is registered to an active Samsung account. The company recommends turning on location services in advance, especially in cases of loss or theft.

To unlock, the user logs in to the service, selects the “Unlock” option and enters the Samsung account password. The system then releases the phone within seconds and shows the message “Your phone is unlocked”. The method works for users who set up the account beforehand and keep the device connected to the internet. It does not work if the user has also forgotten the Samsung account password.

Why the iPhone requires a full restore

Unlocking a forgotten iPhone takes more steps, and Apple keeps the restore as the only solution. The process uses recovery mode and requires a computer with iTunes on Windows or Finder on macOS. Apple says the complexity reflects its focus on security, but it can be difficult for less experienced users.

The phone must be turned off and connected to the computer by USB cable. On an iPhone 8 or later, the user presses the side button and one volume button until the recovery screen appears. The computer then detects the device, and the “Restore” option downloads the latest software. If the process takes more than 15 minutes, the iPhone can leave recovery mode and the steps must start again.

  • The restore requires a computer with iTunes or Finder and a cable that works.
  • The restore deletes all information on the device.
  • Older models may need extra steps, described on Apple’s website.

Ways to avoid a reset

Not every case requires drastic measures. On Android, users who set up Smart Lock can unlock the phone through trusted devices, such as smartwatches, or trusted places, such as the home. The feature must be configured beforehand and is available on recent models.

On Samsung phones, fingerprint or facial recognition can serve as an alternative, if enabled before the lock. On some iPhones, the “Forgot Passcode” option asks for the Apple ID password to reset the access code, but it depends on an internet connection and an active iCloud account.

Precautions before unlocking a phone

The main risk is the permanent loss of data on a device without backup. Google Drive, iCloud and Samsung Cloud are the cloud services most often recommended to store photos, contacts and documents. Automatic backups reduce the damage of a forced reset.

Users should also confirm they are on official sites before entering credentials, to avoid phishing scams. After unlocking, the owner should create a strong new password and, if possible, turn on two-factor authentication.

Third-party tools and their limits

Besides official solutions, the market offers third-party software such as Tenorshare 4uKey and iMyFone LockWiper. They promise to remove passwords on iPhones and Androids, in some cases without a reset, and work on Windows and macOS. Their effectiveness, however, varies with the model and the operating system.

These programs are usually paid, with licenses priced between US$ 30 and US$ 70, and some functions are limited to premium versions. The use of such software can also breach the terms of service of manufacturers such as Apple. The risks include incompatibility with newer models and system updates, so these tools should be a last resort.

New features in Android 15 and iOS 18

Android 15 added offline support to Google’s Find My Device for some models, which allows locating and unlocking the phone without internet, but only after prior setup and on compatible devices, such as the Pixel 9 line. iOS 18 introduced assisted recovery, in which a trusted contact can help unlock the iPhone with a temporary code. Samsung extended Find My Mobile to voice unlocking on premium models, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7, using commands authenticated by the user’s account.

These features depend on prior configuration and on the owner’s familiarity with the tools. Global reports indicate that about 30 percent of smartphone users face lock-outs each year, with higher rates in emerging markets, where many people rely on simple passwords and lack backups.

Where to get help and what it costs

Authorized stores for Samsung and Apple offer unlocking with warranty, and their prices vary by model. Estimates cited in the report put Android unlocking between US$ 20 and US$ 50 and iPhone unlocking between US$ 50 and US$ 120. Authorized services keep the manufacturer’s warranty in place.

Informal technicians can charge less, but they carry risks, such as installing unofficial software, losing the warranty or exposing personal data. Users should check the reputation of any service before handing over the device.
