Galvão Bueno undergoes back surgery before covering the World Cup

Sports narrator Galvão Bueno was admitted this Friday (22) to Hospital Albert Einstein, in São Paulo, to undergo elective spine surgery. The procedure takes place just over two weeks before the start of Copa of Mundo, scheduled for June 11th. The operation will be under the responsibility of doctor Hallim Ferez, a recognized specialist in the field of spine surgery.

The surgery was not an emergency, but an elective and planned procedure. Segundo official statement from Galvão Bueno’s team, he was feeling a lot of pain caused by an old herniated disc. The narrator had mentioned the problem on his program Galvão FC on May 18th. The estimated recovery is five to seven days, as informed by the communicator’s office.

Familiares and members of the Galvão Bueno team express confidence in a quick recovery. The schedule foresees that the narrator will travel to Estados Unidos on June 7th and be present at Copa’s Mundo to broadcast the games on SBT and N Sports, as had already been planned before hospitalization.

Galvão Bueno is one of SBT’s main names for Copa’s coverage of Mundo 2026. Ele has actively participated in the broadcaster’s strategic definitions for the tournament. SBT obtained rights to show 32 World Cup matches, including all Seleção Brasileira games, in a multiplatform operation that also involves the N Sports platform.

The Abravanel broadcaster reinforced its team of narrators and commentators to cover the event. Além from Galvão Bueno, SBT will feature Tiago Leifert and Mauro Naves, both former Globo professionals with a strong identification with football. The partnership with N Sports, which has Galvão Bueno as a partner, is part of the broadcaster’s strategy to expand the reach of transmission.

Copa of Mundo FIFA 2026 will be held between June and July on Estados Unidos, Canadá and México. The tournament marks the first time that the competition will be played in three countries simultaneously.
