The Copa of the 2026 Mundo will go down in football history as the first edition played simultaneously in 3 countries. The tournament will take place between June 11th and July 19th, bringing together 48 teams — a significant increase compared to the 32 teams in previous editions. Estados Unidos, Canadá and México will host the competition, a decision motivated by the expansion of the number of participants.

New Estrutura with 48 teams

The 48-pick format represents a historic shift from Copas to Mundo. Até 2022, the tournament had 32 teams, which limited the participation of federations. The expansion requires complex logistics, more games and robust infrastructure to accommodate delegations, fans and the technical structure of each team.

FIFA determined that distribution between 3 host countries was the best solution to ensure adequate organization. Esse model makes it possible to take advantage of existing infrastructure in the 3 countries and facilitates the movement of teams during the competition period.

16 stadiums distributed between the three nations

The games will be held in 16 different stadiums. Os Estados Unidos will host the majority, with 11 arenas. Canadá will have 3 stadiums and México 2. The geographic distribution was strategically designed to:

  • Reduzir selection offset time
  • Adaptar teams to local time zone and weather
  • Aproveitar modernized structures
  • Facilitar fan access
  • Distribuir hosting and infrastructure demand

Essa will not be the first Copa with multiple host countries. In 2002, Japão and Coreia from Sul co-organized the competition, an edition that marked Seleção Brasileira’s fifth championship. Porém, the 2026 edition will be unprecedented as it involves 3 nations.

Data opening and inaugural clash

Estádio Azteca, on México, will host the inaugural game on June 11th. México and África of Sul open the competition at 4pm (Brasília time). The Mexican stadium is one of the most iconic in the history of Copas and will once again be the stage for an opening game. Sua’s ability and history made it a strategic choice for the first confrontation.

Brasil’s Estreia set for June 13

Seleção Brasileira makes its debut on June 13th against Marrocos at MetLife Stadium, located at Nova Jersey, Estados Unidos. The clash is scheduled for 7pm (Brasília time). The expectation is for a strong campaign from Brasil in search of a new world title in an edition considered historic.

Brasil enters 2026 as one of the favorites, seeking their 6th world title. Participation in three different countries creates a unique environment for competition, with a diversity of audiences, climates and structures that challenge all teams in a balanced way.

The expansion to 48 teams also democratizes participation, allowing confederations previously excluded due to limited places to now have the opportunity to participate. Essa change repositions Copa from Mundo as a truly global competition, where more nations share the stage at football’s biggest celebration.
