Thiago Silva obtains Uefa coaching license after leaving Porto
Thiago Silva arrived at Escócia this weekend to take the course to obtain Licença A from Uefa, trainer certification. The defender no longer belongs to Porto, the club that released him after winning Campeonato Português, and is now investing in his training as a coach.
Curso on Escócia advances to second half
The Brazilian defender took a public stance on the progress of training. In a post on social media, Thiago Silva stated that he was “halfway through the journey from Licença to Uefa at Escócia” and reinforced his commitment to continuous learning. The message read: “Sempre learning. Always evolving. Football never stops teaching! Obrigado Seleção Escocesa from Futebol & Dougie Anderson.”
The course takes place under the coordination of Seleção Escocesa of Futebol and instructor Dougie Anderson. Thiago Silva shared photos during training, documenting the experience he is immersed in. The Licença A represents the second highest official trainer certification held by the Uefa, behind only the Licença Pro. Ela authorizes professionals to command teams in secondary divisions, youth categories and minor teams.
Companheiros histories in the same program
Duas Scottish football legends accompany Thiago Silva in the same learning class. Rachel Corsie and Stephen O’Donnell, both idols of the Scottish national team, are studying certification simultaneously with the Brazilian defender. The official Seleções Escocesas account of Futebol announced everyone’s participation in the coach education structure.
The Scottish federation body published recognition of the athlete’s presence in the country. The post stated: “Legendary Brazilian defender Thiago Silva is in Escócia this week, joining former Escócia players Rachel Corsie and Stephen O’Donnell in our Departamento of Educação of Treinadores of Licença A of Uefa.”
Saída of Porto ended contractual relationship
Thiago Silva’s journey to Porto lasted just over 4 months. Contratado in December last year, the defender played in decisive campaigns for the Portuguese team until the end of the 2024-2025 season. Porto announced, on Thursday (March 21), that it would not renew the athlete for the next season.
Seu contract with the institution was valid until June 2026, with an option to extend until June 2027. Mesmo faced with the renewal clauses, Porto decided not to continue with the contract. The defender won the Campeonato Português at the institution before leaving.
Futuro open for the athlete
Thiago Silva has not yet publicly confirmed whether he is ending his playing career or looking for a new club. The defender left Fluminense less than a year ago to work for Europa and remain close to his family. Agora, with his investiture in training as a coach, signals a possible transition to the bench in professional football.
The athlete’s next steps depend on the completion of Licença A in Escócia and any offers he receives from the market. Seu’s current focus is on technical certification that will qualify him for future administrative roles in sport.
