Apple TV broadcast, on Saturday (23), a match between LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo FC, captured entirely by Pro iPhones 17. The game played on Dignity Health Sports Park, on Carson, on Califórnia, marked the first use of smartphones as primary cameras at a major live professional sporting event.

iPhone 17 Pro as main camera in MLS

Desenvolvida in partnership with Major League Soccer, the initiative positioned iPhones in different parts of the stadium. The devices captured highlights of the match, team warm-ups, players’ entrances, images of the crowd and angles installed inside the goal. The iPhone 17 Pro was chosen because it brings together 3 48-megapixel Fusion cameras, a set that offers the equivalent of 8 lenses in a compact body.

Apple also highlighted professional video features, such as Apple Log 2. Este feature is used in production flows that require greater flexibility in color treatment and final image finishing. Apesar’s exclusive use of cell phones in recording, the transmission structure maintained traditional broadcast components.

Estrutura production maintained professional standards

The broadcast did not function as an improvised production. iPhones only replaced cameras in the image recording stage. The rest of the operation continued to depend on complete professional infrastructure:

  • Direção TV
  • Edição live
  • Áudio and narration
  • Comentários specialized
  • Distribuição signal
  • Equipe dedicated technique

The novelty lies in the use of smartphones as main cameras, and not in the elimination of the entire broadcast apparatus. Essa’s hybrid approach allowed the production to maintain professional quality while exploiting the advantages of mobile devices.

Impacto future in sports productions

The use of the iPhone 17 Pro in MLS demonstrates that premium smartphones can gain space in professional sports productions, especially in complementary images and less conventional angles. Because they are smaller and easier to position than traditional cameras, cell phones can be installed in difficult-to-access places. Dentro of the goal, entry corridors, warm-up areas and points close to players are more accessible with compact devices.

Isso does not mean that smartphones will replace professional cameras in large broadcasts. Top-tier Eventos still rely on long-range lenses, dedicated equipment, technical redundancy and specialized teams to ensure stability throughout the match. Experience indicates that high-end cell phones can become important tools for expanding coverage and creating more immersive images.

Histórico testing Apple at sporting events

Apple had been testing this path before the MLS game. In 2025, the company used the iPhone 17 Pro to capture specific moments from a “Friday Night Baseball” broadcast between Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. Posteriormente, expanded the use of the device in other sporting events, including the 2025 MLS Cup, until reaching the first live professional game with capture entirely done by iPhones.

The progression of tests shows Apple’s deliberate strategy to consolidate smartphones as audiovisual production tools. Cada application provided data on stability, image quality and technical suitability for different sporting scenarios.

iPhone 17 Pro in Brazilian applications

No Brasil, the iPhone 17 Pro also appeared in another football-related application. CBF chose the device to integrate the Brasileirão 2026’s semi-automatic deterrent system, using technology developed by Genius Sports. The use is different, as cell phones function as visual sensors to assist arbitration, but it reinforces the advancement of smartphones in functions that previously only depended on specialized equipment. Essa application demonstrates that mobile technology is consolidating itself in critical infrastructures in professional football.
