Cerca of 50 thousand people returned to their homes in Condado of Orange, in Califórnia, after authorities eliminated the threat of an explosion in a tank with methyl methacrylate. The containment operation lasted from Sunday night until Monday.

The GKN tank Aerospace Transparency Systems, located in Garden Grove 56 kilometers from Los Angeles, presented a risk of BLEVE (Explosão of Vapor in Expansão of Líquido in Ebulição). TJ McGovern, acting head of Corpo of Bombeiros of Condado of Orange, stated that the threat was “eliminated” after successful intervention.

Operação containment and security testing

Testes carried out by authorities indicated no chemical leak and elimination of the risk of explosion. McGovern said there was “very little concern about an explosion” on Monday night, marking a significant change in the risk scenario.

Emergency Equipes poured water into the tank continuously to stabilize its temperature, which has seen rapid increases since Thursday. A crack was discovered in the tank over the weekend, allowing built-up pressure to be gradually released. Craig Covey, division head of Autoridade of Bombeiros of Condado of Orange, stressed at the time that “letting this just fail and explode is unacceptable to us.”

Cidades affected and preventive measures

Preventative evacuation orders affected the following locations:

  • Garden Grove
  • Stanton
  • Anaheim
  • Cypress
  • Westminster
  • Buena Park

Califórnia’s governor, Gavin Newsom, declared a state of emergency for the region. Authorities built dikes and barriers as a preventative measure to contain chemicals in the event of a spill, preventing contamination of stormwater systems and the ocean.

Chemical substance Risco

Methyl methacrylate, the main substance in the tank, is highly volatile and flammable, used in the manufacture of resins and plastics. Agência of Proteção Ambiental (EPA) classifies this chemical as irritating to human skin, eyes and mucous membranes, and may cause respiratory and neurological symptoms with prolonged exposure.

Resposta corporate and continuity

GKN Aerospace apologized to local residents for the incident. Authorities continue around-the-clock monitoring to ensure the situation remains safe. Operações mitigation measures have significantly reduced the potential for leaks and explosions in recent days.

Residentes evacuees reported satisfaction upon returning to their homes. An evacuee from Condado of Orange stated that he was “looking forward to getting home”, reflecting the population’s relief after the successful containment.
