Konami streamed nearly an hour of gameplay from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on a Japanese live stream, marking the title’s official debut on a platform other than PlayStation 3. The game will be released from Sony’s exclusive hardware for the first time in 18 years as part of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, collection confirmed for August 27, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PC via Steam.

The exhibition revealed technical and content details about the port. Konami maintains classic items such as the iPod, allowing the player to listen to music during the campaign, and the Playboy magazine, used to distract enemies. Esses elements suggest that other original collaborations, Mountain Dew, Walkman, Doritos and Uniqlo, will also be preserved in the cross-platform versions.

Dezoito years of PlayStation exclusivity end in August

Metal Gear Solid 4 was released exclusively for the PS3 in 2008. For nearly two decades, it remained stuck on Sony’s hardware without any official re-release on contemporary platforms. The console’s peculiar architecture and the size of the original BD-ROM discs, which reached 54GB in an era before mass digital distribution, made any migration technically complex.

Konami overcame these obstacles without the involvement of Hideo Kojima, the creator of the franchise, who has remained detached from the company since 2015. Porting to modern platforms has always been described by the industry as a considerable challenge. The difficulty in working with the PS3 architecture complicated any attempt to adapt when the digital market was still in its infancy.

What does Master Collection Vol. 2 will include

The collection has three main titles:

  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (expanded version for cross-platform)
  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (HD version Collection originally for PS3)
  • Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (Game Boy Color title from 2000, as an exclusive bonus)

Cada game will be accompanied by a scenario book with the full text and a master book with in-depth details about the story and characters. The digital version includes the soundtrack Metal Gear Solid: Digital Soundtrack Vol. 2 with memorable tracks from the franchise.

Jogadores that have save data from any Master Collection Vol title. 1 will receive exclusive items usable in MGS4 and Peace Walker. The collection will fully restore Metal Gear Solid 4 Database, a database that brings together the complete canon of the series up until the game’s original release.

Alterações expected control and compatibility

The presence of the iPod and Playboy magazine confirmed on the broadcast raises expectations about the preservation of classic commercial collaborations. The only reference that will likely change in non-PlayStation versions is the PS3’s DualShock controller, which Snake uses to operate some gadgets during the campaign. Substitutos equivalents will be implemented to ensure playability on other controllers.

Last Sunday’s Japanese live stream provided an unprecedented view of the game running outside of the PS3, allowing us to see how Konami maintains the original experience while adapting specific elements from the original platform. Detalhes visuals and gameplay mechanics appear preserved, indicating a focus on fidelity to the original structure.

Próximos steps towards the Metal Gear franchise

Após the launch of Master Collection Vol. 2, Konami plans to expand the franchise in new directions. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, remake of previously announced Metal Gear Solid 3, remains in development. Esse project represents the publisher’s continued investment in the series.

The strategy of re-releasing classic titles on modern platforms while developing new projects reflects Konami’s larger move to re-engage with historically important intellectual properties. The absence of Kojima, creative founder of the saga, did not prevent the continuity of ports and remakes.

Pré-purchases are available on PlayStation Store, with prices varying by platform and region. PC via Steam, Switch 2 hybrid console and Xbox platforms will also receive the title in the same period. The access expansion represents the first opportunity in nearly two decades for non-PlayStation players to experience MGS4 on modern hardware.

The launch in August marks a significant return for a property that remained isolated for a long time. Konami’s gameplay broadcast signaled confidence in the technical prowess and willingness to share details with the global community of fans before official release.
