Scopely has officially scrapped plans to develop a direct sequel to Pokémon GO. Ed Wu, CEO of the Saudi mobile giant that acquired Niantic in 2025 for US$3.5 billion, confirmed in an interview that launching an Pokémon GO 2 is not part of the company’s future strategy.

The decision was justified by the preservation of the existing community. Segundo Wu, fragmenting users between two different versions would weaken the ecosystem built over nearly a decade since the original launch in 2016.

Comunidade and social-first experience

The CEO emphasized that the social aspect remains a central pillar of the game’s success. Encontros face-to-face and real-world exploration define the identity of Pokémon GO, elements that a traditional sequel could compromise by dividing the player base between different versions.

Wu reinforced that Scopely maintains the commitment made at the time of the acquisition: not to implement drastic changes to the title. The approach prioritizes keeping current users engaged rather than seeking growth through a reboot that would potentially alienate the established community.

Futuro with augmented reality, but without direct sequel

Apesar from discarding an Pokémon GO 2, Scopely has signaled interest in new projects involving augmented reality and geographic exploration. Porém, these titles will utilize completely different approaches rather than continuing the already established narrative and mechanics.

The company recognizes that the original experience faces technical limitations accumulated over almost ten years. Older Sistemas, online features, and graphical aspects pose increasing challenges. Contudo, the company opted for innovation in different directions rather than modernizing a direct sequence that could fragment its most valuable base.

Impacto in the global community

Pokémon GO continues to attract new users and maintain rare relevance for a 2016 game. The title remains extremely popular in squares, monuments and tourist attractions around the world. Multidões still get together to capture creatures using augmented reality on smartphones.

The decision divides opinions among fans. Parte from the community prefers to preserve the current base of the game. Outra slice of players expected a sequel capable of modernizing old systems, improving connectivity and renewing technical aspects accumulated during continuous updates.

  • Adquirido by Scopely in 2025 for US$3.5 billion
  • Comunidade social identified as biggest asset
  • Novos AR projects in parallel development

Competitividade the next few years in question

The absence of concrete plans for direct evolution creates uncertainty about how the experience will remain competitive in the coming decades. Tecnologia Mobile advances quickly and new titles hit the market constantly. Pokémon GO will rely on continuous updates and incremental improvements to retain players as it ages further.

Ed Wu highlighted that real-world exploration and in-person meetings justify maintaining the existing structure. Essa uniqueness sets Pokémon GO apart from purely digital competitors. The strategy assumes that this differentiation will be enough to maintain engagement even without a direct successor that could offer radical modernization of the game’s core systems.
