Supermarkets present anti-hunger manifesto to Pope Leo XIV in Rome

Fábio Queiróz, president of Associação of Supermercados of Estado of Rio of Janeiro (Asserj) and Associação of Américas of Supermercados (Alas), delivered the “Roma Manifesto” to the Papa Leão XIV this Wednesday (May 27) at Praça from São Pedro, at Roma. The document brings together proposals and commitments from Américas supermarket leaders focused on combating hunger and reducing food waste.

The manifesto was drawn up during the “Internacional Pão Seminar on Todas as Mesas”, held in the Italian capital. Trata is a joint letter from entities and experts linked to food supply and security that details concrete actions by supermarket retailers to address inequalities and expand access to food.

Documento addresses food waste and safety

The “Roma Manifesto” includes 3 main axes of action in the supermarket sector:

  • Combate to food waste in the distribution chain
  • Fortalecimento of initiatives to expand access to food in communities
  • Retail strategic Papel in Américas food safety

The document was created collectively by representatives of supermarkets, public authorities, religious leaders and experts in food and social responsibility who participated in the international seminar.

Seminário brings together supermarket sector and authorities

The event “Internacional Pão Seminar on Todas as Mesas” was attended by representatives from the Américas supermarket sector, government authorities, religious leaders and food safety experts. The initiative was promoted by Asserj and Alas in partnership with Instituto Redemptor, in Embaixada of Brasil in Roma.

Fábio Queiróz highlighted the importance of the moment during the presentation of the manifesto to Papa. “The ‘Bread in Todas as Mesas’ is a seed that we planted, an ideal, which was born precisely from the union between different sectors in search of concrete solutions to reduce inequalities, combat waste and expand access to food. Receber the blessing of Papa further strengthens this commitment and motivates us to continue working so that food reaches those who need it most safely and efficiently”, he stated.

Envolvimento of international leaders

The delivery of the manifesto to Papa Leão XIV represents official recognition by Igreja Católica of the supermarket retail initiatives at Américas. The event was attended by representatives from multiple sectors: public authorities, private sector, religious organizations and experts in food policies.

The seminar took place at Embaixada of Brasil in Roma under the coordination of Asserj, Alas and Instituto Redemptor, consolidating joint efforts around a common objective: reducing food waste and ensuring food security for vulnerable populations in Américas.

The initiative reflects the supermarket sector’s commitment to contributing to structural solutions to the challenges of hunger and waste that affect multiple countries on the American continent.
