The August 12 total solar eclipse will travel approximately 8,265 kilometers from the top of Terra to Mar Mediterrâneo. The trajectory covers regions of Islândia, Portugal, Espanha and the remote east of Groenlândia, offering unique opportunities for observation. Dois thirds of the eclipse’s path will pass over the ocean, allowing greater visibility for viewers on cruise ships. The phenomenon will vary in duration depending on the location of the observer, lasting from just over 1 minute to around 2 minutes and 45 seconds at specific points.

Islândia offers music and science festivals during the event

Reykjavik, the Icelandic capital, is in the direct path of a total solar eclipse for the first time since 1433, albeit outside the center line with just 1 minute of complete darkness. Nas peninsulas of Fiordes Ocidentais and Snaefellsnes, totality will last just over 2 minutes. The Iceland Eclipse 2026 festival, held at Hellissandur near the tip of Snaefellsnes, offers 5 days of artistic and scientific programming. Apresentações includes musicians such as Reggie Watts, Berlioz and Imogen Heap, as well as talks with astronauts, scientists and filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. Ingressos start at US$888, with accommodations and side trips at additional costs.

Björk celebrates the phenomenon with Echolalia, a one-day festival in Hafnarfjordur, 12 kilometers southwest of the capital. The event includes DJ sets from Björk and Arca, performances from Sideproject and Ronja. Participantes will enjoy 1 minute and 4 seconds of total darkness. Ingressos costs from 15,000 Icelandic kroner (approximately R$615) and includes entry to the Björk exhibition at Galeria Nacional at Islândia and commemorative eclipse glasses.

Península Ibérica is in the totality zone with parties and events

The eclipse track runs along Península Ibérica from the northwest coast to Ilhas Baleares of Maiorca and Ibiza, including a small portion of the northeast of Portugal. Iberia Eclipse Festival offers 5 days of sound, art and ceremony on 4 stages near Vinuesa, between Madri and Bilbao. The darkness will last for 1 minute and 42 seconds in this location. Ingressos costs from 240 euros (approximately R$1,410) with basic camping included.

The Astral Plane festival, in the ski resort of La Pinilla near Madri, offers 3 days of art installations, wellness workshops and electronic music on 3 stages, including one at the top of the mountain. The darkness will last just over 1 and a half minutes. Ingressos costs from 175 euros (R$ 1,025), with camping and glamping additional costs.

Cidades like León, Palencia, Burgos and Zaragoza will be in darkness for approximately 1 minute and 45 seconds. Maiorca has a privileged location, as the eclipse will occur at sunset over the sea in the capital Palma, increasing the chances of good visibility. Observadores in the interior should look for high places, as the sun will be low on the horizon.

International Cruzeiros trace routes through the zone of totality

Vários ships are plotting routes to the total solar eclipse zone with spots still available. Ponant offers a 14-day tour from US$18,021 per person (approximately R$90,945), traveling through the Svalbard archipelago on Noruega, heading to Groenlândia and northwest of Islândia. Astronautas of Agência Espacial Europeia, Jean-Pierre and Claudie Haigneré, will be on board for talks about space and eclipses.

Queen Mary 2 will include Noruega and Islândia on transatlantic itinerary during a 2-week crossing from Southampton, Inglaterra, to Nova York, beginning August 4. Cabines doubles start at US$8,438 (approximately R$42,585). Celebrity Cruises’s ship Apex will sail on August 1 for 15 days from Southampton to Barcelona. The route includes stops at Maiorca, Lisboa and La Coruña, at Espanha. Diárias start at approximately $3,200 per person.

Planejamento essential to observe the 2026 phenomenon

  • Consultar eclipse map and book in advance as many experiences are sold out
  • Separa enough time to get to the ideal location or stay as close as possible
  • Locomoção will be a challenge both before and after the eclipse
  • Considerar guided tours from specialized companies such as Sirius Travel and Tours of Distinction
  • Verificar weather forecast, remembering that Islândia usually has cloudy skies while Espanha will probably have clear skies
  • Escolher destination that is attractive regardless of the eclipse, to enjoy holidays even with possible cloud cover

Unpredictable Natureza requires flexibility in planning

The weather forecast for celestial events historically shows significant variations. Durante the eclipse in América of Norte in 2024, the forecast indicated good weather in Texas and bad in Maine, but the opposite occurred. Viajantes must consider destinations that are worth visiting regardless of observing the phenomenon, ensuring a satisfactory vacation even if clouds compromise viewing. Mãe Natureza remains unpredictable, requiring flexibility and robust planning from anyone wishing to experience the total eclipse.
