The aircraft completed its maiden flight in October 2025. Depois underwent maintenance and returned to testing in March 2026. Desde then performed more than 14 flights.
Engineers tested retracting the landing gear and observed the clean aerodynamic profile. The X-59 reached altitudes of up to 43,000 feet and speeds approaching Mach 0.95. Equipes also made double flights in a single day, which became routine.
- Landing gear Recolhimento in flight
- Alcance of speeds close to the sound barrier
- Transição between fast high-altitude flights and slow low-altitude tests
- Avaliação fuel, hydraulic and environmental systems
- Monitoramento of Sistema of Visão Externa based on cameras
Esses data helped validate structural performance. Sensores measured loads during takeoffs, landings and various maneuvers. The team gained confidence to move forward.
Testes initial supersonics will use escort aircraft
The first flight above Mach 1 will not yet focus on noise reduction. A conventional supersonic escort aircraft will accompany the X-59. The louder rumbles of the escort will mask the sounds generated by the experimental aircraft.
Pilotos will take the X-59 to over 630 mph at 43,000 feet. Next will be the flight under mission conditions, with Mach 1.4 at approximately 16,764 meters. A special probe in the escort will measure the shock waves.
Essa strategy allows collecting initial performance data without external interference. Supersonic tests are expected to take place throughout the summer. Nem all flights will be supersonic. The team will maintain a mix of subsonic and lower altitude operations.
Sistema design seeks to transform supersonic travel
The X-59 has an elongated shape and a thin nose to reduce sonic boom. The goal is to transform the traditional boom into a softer thump, similar to the closing of a car door.
The Sistema of Visão Externa replaces the front windshield with cameras. Isso helps with aerodynamics and provides real-time vision to the pilot. The aircraft was built by Lockheed Martin in partnership with Nasa.
Cathy Bahm, project manager of Demonstrador of Voo of Baixo Estrondo, highlighted the importance of the milestone. Cada envelope expansion brings the team closer to the mission’s core capability.
Fase 1 of mission Quest focuses on performance and airworthiness
Todos flights so far are part of Fase 1 of the Quest mission. The focus is on proving the aircraft’s performance in real conditions.
Specialized Equipamentos probes, such as probes on Nasa F-15 aircraft, are already in use for initial measurements. The data will prepare the ground for Fase 2, scheduled for late 2026. At the Nessa stage, Nasa will directly measure the acoustic signature over communities.
The team evaluates essential systems and collects feedback on the jet’s behavior in different flight regimes. Progress reinforces confidence in the project.
Próximos steps include maximum altitude of 60 thousand feet
The aircraft is expected to reach Mach 1.6 and 60,000 feet in future tests. Essas marks represent the planned limits for the mission.
Engenheiros will continue to gradually expand the envelope. The work involves controlled risks and constant data analysis. Nasa emphasizes meticulous preparation for each flight.
The X-59 project represents technological advancement in aviation. If successful, it could influence the return of commercial supersonic travel over land.
