The Uruguay team will have three major absences confirmed for their debut match in the 2026 World Cup against Saudi Arabia. Midfielder Arrascaeta and defenders Ronald Araújo and José María Giménez will not take the field in the clash scheduled for next Monday, at 7pm (Brasília time), in Miami, in the United States.

The seriousness of Arrascaeta’s physical situation became evident this Thursday, when the player was seen limping heavily when disembarking the delegation bus. The Flamengo athlete is treating a grade 2 calf injury, a problem that generated public friction between the Rio club and the Uruguayan association.

Medical crisis generates friction between Flamengo and Uruguay

Arrascaeta’s injury occurred during training with the national team. The medical impasse caused Flamengo to send physiotherapist Laniyan Neves to Cancun, Mexico, with the aim of closely monitoring the athlete’s progress and joining Celeste’s support committee.

The Rio de Janeiro club published an official note expressing strong dissatisfaction with the Uruguayan federation. The red and black board classified the selection’s conduct as irresponsible in relation to the deadlines and methods adopted in the midfielder’s recovery process.

Clinical situation of defenders and concern for Valverde

Coach Marcelo Bielsa’s defensive line also suffered important casualties in the first game of the tournament. Defender Ronald Araújo suffered a muscle strain during the preparation phase and had to travel to Spain for intensive treatment. The defender has already returned to the squad in Mexican territory, but remains vetoed by doctors for his debut. José María Giménez is another defender who is not fit to play.

To increase the warning signal among the coaching staff, midfielder Federico Valverde missed the first tactical activity held this Thursday in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The Real Madrid player remained in the hotel’s internal facilities performing specific muscle strengthening exercises in the gym.

Uruguay’s schedule in the group stage of the World Cup

Uruguay makes up Group H of the World Cup alongside Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde and Spain. The regulations for this edition of the World Cup, which features 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four teams, classifies the top two in each group and the eight best overall third-placed teams for the knockout stage. Losing starting athletes at the start increases the pressure on Marcelo Bielsa’s men to seek a place in the following stages.

Below, details of the Uruguayans’ commitments in the first phase of the competition:

  • Uruguay x Saudi Arabia:Monday, June 15th, at 7pm, in Miami
  • Uruguay x Cape Verde:Sunday, June 21, at 7pm, in Miami
  • Uruguay x Spain:Friday, June 26th at 9pm in Akron
