Bus with basketball champions overturns in Ceará, causing the death of seven young athletes
Seven young athletes lost their lives and dozens of people were injured after a serious accident involving a bus on the CE-187 highway, near the city of Tauá, in the interior of Ceará, during the early hours of last Monday (15). In response to the tragedy, the state governor, Elmano de Freitas, expressed deep solidarity with the family and friends of those involved.
Through his social networks, Elmano de Freitas expressed great regret upon learning of what happened on CE-187, which connects Tauá to Quiterianópolis. The head of the state executive highlighted that the basketball delegation was transporting young people and highlighted the rapid mobilization of rescue teams, including Samu, the Fire Department and the Military Police, to help the victims. He concluded his message by conveying wishes of comfort and solidarity to all those affected.
The young people who died were members of the basketball team at a school in the city of Juazeiro do Norte. Hours before the fateful event, they had won the Copa Sobral 2026 title in the Under-19 category, a moment of celebration that preceded the tragic return trip.
The Ceará Department of Education (Seduc) also issued a statement regarding the accident. The ministry expressed solidarity with the family members and the school community, informing that it will closely monitor the investigation and provide all necessary collaboration to the competent authorities.
The vehicle rollover occurred near the district of Santa Teresa, located in the rural area of the municipality of Tauá.
The collective was transporting team members back to Juazeiro do Norte after the basketball competition, at which point the vehicle left the track and overturned. According to reports from police officers who worked at the scene, many passengers were not wearing seat belts. During the crash, the victims were thrown out and hit by the bus itself, resulting in the death of seven young people, all male, whose identities have not yet been formally confirmed.
Police authorities reported that the seven bodies were rescued from inside the crashed bus and will be taken to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) of Tauá for the appropriate procedures.
Preliminary information indicates that a name on the bus passenger list remains unlocated. It is not yet known whether this person boarded the vehicle before the trip.
Investigation seeks to clarify the causes of the fatal rollover on the highway

At the time of publishing this news, the exact reasons for the rollover have not yet been determined. A technical expertise team will be responsible for investigating whether the accident was caused by any human error on the part of the driver or by a mechanical breakdown in the vehicle.
A deputy lieutenant from the Fire Department who participated in the rescue revealed that he had spoken to the driver, who offered conflicting explanations about what had happened. First, the driver claimed to have fallen asleep at the wheel, but then mentioned the existence of holes on the road – a version denied by the firefighter himself, who did not identify any irregularities in the asphalt. Although emotionally shaken, the driver appeared to be physically fine.
The call for the incident reached the emergency teams at around 3:24 am, alerting them to victims who were trapped between the wreckage. At the scene, agents immediately began search, rescue and first aid operations, counting on essential support from other security and health agencies.
According to information released by the Fire Department, the damaged vehicle was transporting not only the sports delegation, but also other passengers.
At approximately 8 am, the work to remove the bodies trapped in the wreckage and recover personal belongings was completed. The section of the CE-187 highway where the accident occurred remains closed in both directions to continue forensic and cleaning work.
