Nurse waiting for rope jump reveals she tried to save young woman thrown without rope with weak pulse
A 26-year-old nurse, who was preparing for a rope jump moments after Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, the young woman who died after being thrown without the main rope, reported to the police that she had provided assistance and tried to revive the victim. The incident occurred at Ponte do Esqueleto, in Limeira.
In her statement to the Civil Police, Rayza Gabrieli Dias Delfino, the health professional, described going down to the base of the bridge and finding Maria Eduarda with an extremely weak pulse.
“She had those sighs that precede death… I approached, checked her pulse and found that it was very weak. I started to perform cardiac massage, but the pulse stopped”, detailed Rayza.
The nurse also reported that the young woman had safety equipment attached to her waist, however, the main rope, essential for the sport, was not attached. She remained offering first aid until emergency teams arrived.
Ambulance rescuers had to cut off the rest of the victim’s equipment to be able to use the defibrillator, but resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.
Differences between rope jump and bungee jump
*rope jump* is an activity that uses static, non-elastic ropes, providing a pendulum movement after the initial fall. The more well-known *bungee jump* uses an elastic rope that allows the jumper to repeatedly bounce up and down.
Upon witnessing the seriousness of the situation and the despair of the friend who accompanied Maria Eduarda on the platform, the nurse asked him to quickly guide her to the place of the fall to begin first aid.
Testimony of the health professional who was waiting for her turn to jump
In her statement, Rayza Gabrieli Dias Delfino revealed that she would be the 42nd person to jump that day. With her cell phone, the professional recorded the young woman’s preparation before the fall.
“I was filming to send to an aunt of mine… I couldn’t understand what they were saying because I was completely focused on waiting for my own jump. My eyes were fixed on her, without observing how the equipment was placed… The moment she falls, I start to hear everyone shouting: ‘the rope, the rope'”, described the witness.
Dispute over who should inspect the bridge where the accident occurred
The Skeletor Bridge, located on Estrada Doutor Cássio de Freitas Levy, which connects Limeira to Cordeirópolis, is part of a never-completed section of the old Federal Railway Network (RFFSA) and crosses private properties.
The federal government reported that the process of incorporating the bridge into the Union Heritage Secretariat (SPU) was approved in 2026. Even before that, the government claims to have requested support from local city halls to block access to the structure.
“In 2024, following previous requests, the bridge was blocked for a few months. However, its reopening was later discussed and defended by businesspeople from the region in a session at the Limeira City Council”, detailed the federal government.
In a statement, Limeira City Hall stated that it “had been taking administrative measures and demanding action from the federal agencies responsible for the area” and that the tragedy “makes the continuation of this omission unsustainable and unacceptable.”
According to the municipal administration, inspection, maintenance and access control to the Skeletor Bridge are the exclusive responsibility of the federal government.
The City Hall and the City Council reiterated that they had already sent letters to the competent bodies, demanding security actions. “No concrete measures were adopted”, the entities emphasized.
“In addition to the circumstances that led to the young woman’s death, it is crucial to determine responsibility for the lack of access control to a federal area that, for years, has presented known risks and remains without the necessary protective measures. The City Hall and the Chamber have been demanding measures for months so that the Federal Government assumes its responsibility. Unfortunately, the federal omission has just resulted in yet another tragedy in Limeira”, declared Mayor Murilo Félix (Podemos).
For the federal government, “public authorities at all levels urgently need to join forces to definitively prevent access to the Skeleton Bridge and curb illegal activities. Then, they must decide the future of the bridge jointly.”
The details of the young woman’s fatal fall on the Skeleton Bridge
A video circulating widely on social media shows Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas being taken by three employees to the edge of the platform. She is then propelled forward and, immediately after the fall, desperate screams are heard crying out “the rope” and “people, the rope”.
The young woman fell from a height of 40 meters. His death was confirmed at the scene by teams from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) and the Fire Department.
According to information from the Civil Police, the robust equipment that should have been attached to the victim’s body to ensure safety during the fall was forgotten and remained wrapped around the bridge structure.
A witness, who had scheduled the jump right after the young woman, reported that the instructors did not carry out the mandatory safety check when Maria Eduarda was taking her turn.
