Tunisia coach is fired at the World Cup after being beaten 5-1 by Sweden
The significant 5-1 defeat against Sweden last Sunday resulted in the dismissal of commander Sabri Lamouchi. The initial announcement came from French reporter Romain Molina, receiving subsequent validation by various communication channels and press professionals. An emergency meeting took place immediately after the setback in Monterrey, Mexico, valid for the opening round of Group F. The professional had agreed a thirty-month contract with the FTF in January of this season.
The trend indicates that assistant and former striker Wahbi Khazri will take on the role of provisional commander during the competition. The Tunisian team is scheduled to play against Japan next Sunday, the 21st, at 1am (Brasília time), taking place once again at the El Gigante de Acero arena, in Monterrey, Mexico. The end of the group stage takes place against the Netherlands, on the 25th, at 8pm (Brasília time), in the city of Kansas City (USA).
According to reports from Tunisian media outlets, confusion at the end of the clash involved the descendant of Sabri Lamouchi and a follower of the national team, who ended up suffering attacks from security agents. The former commander’s relative does not have any role in the technical committee or in the African nation’s highest football entity.
The professional’s trajectory at the head of the selected team lasted a very short time. The retrospective recorded one triumph, one draw and three setbacks, counting only five official appearances in the position. The only victory came against Haiti, by a score of 1-0, in their first game. Then there was a 0-0 draw against Canada. The following matches ended in defeats to Austria (1-0), Belgium (5-0) and Sweden (5-1). The team found the back of the net twice and ended up leaking on 11 occasions.
Coach Lamouchi, who has dual French-Tunisian nationality, had previous spells with clubs such as Rennes, Nottingham Forest, Cardiff City and Al-Riyadh. As a former athlete in France’s midfield sector, the professional was also in the technical leadership of Ivory Coast during the 2014 World Cup, hosted in Brazil, when the team ended up disqualified in the first phase of the tournament.
