France takes the field this Tuesday (16) against Senegal, at the MetLife Stadium, in New Jersey, for its debut in Group I of the 2026 World Cup. Between the sticks will be Mike Maignan, the starting goalkeeper who took over the position left by Hugo Lloris.

Maignan, 30, was born in Cayenne, French Guiana, and grew up in the suburbs of Paris. He reached professional football through Paris Saint-Germain’s youth teams, but without making his debut for the main team. He transferred to Lille, where he established himself as a starter and won the Ligue 1 title in the 2020/2021 season.

In 2021, AC Milan paid around 15 million euros to sign him. At the Italian club, Maignan quickly became a reference, winning Serie A in his first season and being voted the best goalkeeper in the championship. He has played over 150 games for the Rossoneri, performing well in high-level games, including the Champions League. His contract was recently extended until 2031.

For the French national team, Maignan debuted in 2020 and has already played around 40 games. He inherited the starting position after the international retirement of Lloris, record holder of games for France, who hung up his boots with the national team after the 2022 World Cup final. Maignan is now experiencing his first World Cup as a player, after being left out in 2022 due to injury.

Rise and playing style

Known as “Magic Mike” or “L’Aigle”, the goalkeeper stands out for his agility in scoring, reflexes in close shots and quality in his footwork — attributes that match France’s ball possession style. In the 2025/2026 season for Milan, he recorded solid numbers of saves and clean sheets, ranking among the top goalkeepers in the major European leagues in metrics such as Expected Goals Prevented.

Your leadership is also valued. Maignan has already served as vice-captain and is seen as a key player in organizing the defense, which features names such as William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano and Jules Koundé.

What changes for France

Maignan’s presence brings security to a team that arrives as one of the big favorites for the title, occupying a prominent position in the FIFA rankings. Unlike the Lloris era, marked by long experience in World Cup finals, the new phase focuses on a goalkeeper at the peak of his career, with a balance between reflexes and game construction.

The opening duel against Senegal, featuring stars like Sadio Mané, will be an immediate test. A good start to the World Cup could give Didier Deschamps’ team confidence in the search for a third star.
