A major operation in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, has brought to light a harrowing reality for animal lovers. More than 500 cats, which are often stolen from their homes and considered family members, have been saved from a clandestine sale scheme, many of them at a critical time before they were put down. The rescue was the result of in-depth investigations into the trafficking network.

After long surveillance, the Ho Chi Minh police managed to dismantle a nationwide criminal organization suspected of operating for approximately three years. Nine individuals were detained during the action. Authorities point out that the gang captured the felines at night or took them directly from homes in the city, which has 14 million inhabitants, and in nearby regions. The animals were then sent to concentration points and traded with middlemen, restaurants or slaughter sites.

Cat and dog meat consumption in Vietnam

In Vietnam, the consumption of dog and cat meat is permitted by law, and many gastronomic establishments include these dishes on their menus as delicacies. However, legislation requires traders to present documentation proving the origin of the animals, such as certificates issued by regulated breeding programs.

Discovery of frozen animals and more rescues

Despite the legality of consumption, the clandestine cat meat market has shown great expansion. In an initial inspection carried out in a parking lot, investigators found 45 cages with around 400 stolen cats, in addition to four Styrofoam boxes containing approximately 80 dead and frozen animals. Subsequent operations led to the seizure of more than 100 additional domestic cats.

A similar case gained widespread attention in China, involving an eight-year-old dog named Chutou. The animal, which was known to be the companion of a famous blogger with 1.5 million followers, ended up being served in a Chinese restaurant, sparking widespread outrage.

How pet thieves act and the impact on the community

Preliminary evidence indicates that criminals operate with great cruelty, preferably in the hours before dawn. Reports describe the use of traps, bait and specific equipment while residents are sleeping. The police force emphasizes that these actions affect the tranquility of residential areas and are only sustainable due to the existence of a consumer market. Therefore, the next stages of the investigation will address all links in the chain, from theft and transportation to the sale and disposal of animals.

Safety recommendations for animal owners and the future of investigations

Cat owners in Ho Chi Minh are receiving instructions to keep their pets under surveillance at night and to reinforce the security of their homes. In case of theft of an animal, the recommendation is to call the police immediately. In a positive outcome, animal protection organization Humane World for Animals reported that forty of the rescued cats have now been returned to their respective owners.
