In a historic moment for Japanese baseball, the Seibu Lions became champions of the Nippon Life Interleague Series for the first time in their history, after a narrow 1-0 victory over Hanshin. The achievement, sealed on the 16th, increased the team’s impressive record to 14 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw, guaranteeing the unprecedented title.
Pioneering achievement of the Interligas Series for Seibu
Celebrations took over the pitch after the final whistle, with Seibu Lions players celebrating breaking a long taboo. The team, which was the only one in the Pacific League without an interleague series title, finally reached the top. Coach Fumiya Nishiguchi, visibly pleased with the performance of 14 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw, expressed his satisfaction modestly, stating that “it’s always good to be number one in anything”.

Spectacular performance from the pitching rotation
The fundamental pillar for this historic triumph was the exceptional performance of the Seibu Lions pitching corps. The starters demonstrated remarkable consistency, recording 12 consecutive quality games, a streak begun by Watanabe on Day 3. Throughout the interleague series, pitchers Watanabe and Taira maintained an impressive 0.86 ERA, while Sumida and Takahashi Hikaru also sported ERAs close to 1.00.
In the decisive game, Takeuchi, who served as the starting pitcher, faced a challenging start until the third inning. However, the athlete demonstrated resilience and considerably improved his performance throughout the game, crediting the improvement to the “pressure that everyone exerted” on him. From the fourth inning onwards, Takeuchi dominated the Hanshin offense, striking out all three batters in order in each inning, giving up just three hits and no runs in six innings, as well as tying his personal best with 10 strikeouts. He concluded his performance by highlighting the relevance of that victory.
Coach analysis and focus on upcoming challenges
Nishiguchi, a former elite pitcher, identified the solidity of the rotation and the momentum generated by the 2-1 victory over the Yakult Swallows earlier in the series as crucial factors in success. Seibu’s attack also played a vital role in the victorious campaign. Hasegawa, who managed two hits in the last game and approached the offensive lead in the interleague series, is already projecting the future: “We want to use this momentum for the league season”, aiming for the team’s first league title in seven years.
