Serena Williams and Venus Williams receive invitation to Wimbledon in the doubles bracket
The third Grand Slam tournament of the year, played on the grass courts of Wimbledon from June 29th, will feature a special highlight on the schedule. Serena Williams, considered one of the greatest athletes of all time in world tennis, confirmed her return to compete in the doubles category together with her sister Venus Williams. The youngest player had announced the end of her career in the 2022 season and recently resumed professional activities, while her older sister continues to participate in individual matches on a regular basis.
The family partnership has one of the most successful and impactful histories within the international tennis scene. At the Wimbledon complex, the pair have already won the trophy on six occasions, adding four trophies from the Australian Open, two from Roland Garros and two more from the US Open. The performance of sportswomen from the United States also accounts for winning three gold medals at the Olympic Games.
Serena Williams’ competitive return took place two weeks ago, ending a period of almost four years without playing on the sport’s official circuits. The tennis player participated in doubles matches at the Queen’s WTA tournament, based in the city of London, but had to interrupt her campaign in the tournament. The athlete playing alongside him, Victoria Mboko, suffered a physical injury during a singles match, which prevented the partnership from appearing in the quarterfinal round after a victory in their debut.
Following the calendar, the American tennis player accumulated a negative result in the first round of the WTA tournament in Berlin, on German soil. Competing in partnership with Czech athlete Karolina Muchova, the athlete ended up being beaten in the opening round by Mexican athlete Giuliana Olmos and New Zealander Erin Routliffe in a score of 2 sets to 0, with identical splits of 6/4 and 6/4.
Currently 44 years old, Serena Williams will play alongside Venus Williams, who is 45 years old, thanks to the official invitation sent by the organizers of the Wimbledon tournament. This type of benefit is granted by the championship administration to competitors who do not have enough points to enter directly using the traditional classification criteria. Due to her recent return to the courts, the player is ranked number 593 on the world list, a position that would bar her entry without the release of the special spot.
