US immigration bars Iranian athletes after World Cup game and generates diplomatic impasse
Iran’s football team began its participation in the World Cup last Monday night (15) with a draw on the pitch and also facing difficulties with immigration procedures in the United States.
The Iranian team reported having received an “immediate order” to leave North American territory shortly after the opening match. Iranian news agencies later reported that the team’s captain, Mehdi Taremi, and an assistant coach were detained at Los Angeles airport, the venue of the match.

The Iranian team’s opening game ended in a 2-2 draw with New Zealand, against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions intensified by the war between Iran and the United States in the Middle East. Given the fact that the 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada, questions arose about Iran’s participation, which guaranteed its place.
To mitigate the situation, FIFA decided to relocate the Iranian national team’s base to Mexico during the tournament, unlike the initial planning that placed it in the United States.
After the match, Iranian coach Amir Ghalenoei confirmed that the team had received an immediate departure instruction from American authorities. Until the last update of this article, United States immigration had not commented on what happened.
Iranian government-controlled news agencies reported that striker Mehdi Taremi, the team’s main star, and coaching staff member Saeid Alhouei were detained at Los Angeles airport as the team prepared to return to Tijuana, Mexico, where they are staying.
The same agencies reported that the two athletes suffered an “unjustified delay” during passport and visa checks at immigration control. Both were released after the procedures, and the entire delegation was able to return to Mexico.
In addition to the airport holding period, the Iranian team also deals with another complication. Striker Mehdi Torabi obtained a visa from the American government that allows only one entry into the United States, unlike the other members of the delegation, who have multiple entry visas.
For the next clash, which will also be held on American soil, the Iran team will need to request a new visa for the player from the US authorities. Sources from Iranian agencies indicate that the Iranian Football Federation has already started legal processes to obtain a new authorization and ensure the athlete’s presence in the next games.

Iran’s next matches are scheduled to take place in the United States: the team will face Belgium in Los Angeles, on Saturday (21). They will then play Egypt in Seattle on June 27th.

Geopolitical scenario and its impact
The Iranian team’s debut at the World Cup coincided with the virtual signing of a truce agreement between the United States and Iran, aiming to end the war in the Middle East. The announcement of the pact had been made over the weekend, after more than three months of conflict, which began on February 28 with joint attacks by the US and Israel on Iranian territory.
In response, Iran has launched several attacks on Persian Gulf nations that are allied with the United States or that host American military bases. Another focus of conflict emerged in Lebanon, where Hezbollah, a terrorist group financed by Iran, retaliated against Israel with attacks.
Since then, the Israeli Army has been bombing Lebanese territory and sending troops to the south of the country.
The agreement reached between the parties provides for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime channel controlled by Iran through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil and gas transits. The United States also pledged to withdraw its Navy ships that maintain a naval blockade at the entrance to the strait, inspecting vessels trading in Iranian ports.
The text of the agreement also establishes a provisional ceasefire, while the two nations debate the central issue still open: the future of Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran reported that consensus among negotiators should be reached within 60 days.
The coach’s outburst about the team’s conditions
Even before Iran’s debut, coach Amir Ghalenoei had already expressed dissatisfaction with the logistics and conditions imposed on his team, stating that the team was being “oppressed”.
Ghalenoei, 62, reported that the delegation faced a series of setbacks. The team planned to spend Monday night in Los Angeles to recover, but were compelled to immediately return to Mexico. The coach did not specify who imposed this restriction.
“We should have stayed here tonight to recover and come back tomorrow at lunchtime, but they didn’t allow us. To be honest, I have no idea why. I think maybe our team is the most oppressed team in the entire World Cup,” said Ghalenoei.
Consulted by Reuters news agency to comment on the statements, the US State Department and FIFA did not immediately respond to requests.
Still at the stadium, Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi expressed that restrictions were preventing the team from demonstrating its best performance in the tournament:
“It’s not good for us. I think it’s not good for football. I believe FIFA needs to support us more than that. It’s very bad and it affects our team, and all we want is peace,” declared the player.
Barrier for fans from Iran and Haiti to enter the USA during the World Cup
The ban on staying in the United States
North American authorities had previously announced that the Iranian team would not be allowed to remain in the United States for the entire duration of the World Cup. Iran’s ambassador to Mexico explained that the visa granted to the 26 players only allows temporary entry into the country to train and participate in matches.
The delegation arrived in Tijuana, Mexico, on June 7, and will remain concentrated in that city during the first phase of the competition.
Initially, the team had plans to stay in Tucson, Arizona. However, the war scenario completely changed the logistics of the selection.
On June 9, two days before the start of the World Cup, the Football Federation of Iran (FFIRI) announced that the country’s ticket quota for the competition had been withdrawn by the United States. This measure made it impossible for fans who had already made travel plans to watch the Iranian national team’s games to enter.
