Democrats deploy Epstein Class rhetoric but refuse to identify specific members of alleged elite

Progressive Democrats have introduced a provocative new term to describe wealthy elites they claim wield disproportionate influence over American politics. The phrase “Epstein Class” has emerged in recent campaign rhetoric, replacing older terminology like “The 1%,” but lawmakers using the expression struggle to provide concrete examples of who belongs to this alleged group. Representatives including Jon Ossoff from Georgia and Jaime Raskin from Maryland have adopted the loaded language, prompting questions about its actual meaning and targets.

The term carries dark connotations, invoking the name of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. However, when pressed for specifics about who comprises this shadowy class, elected officials offer vague descriptions rather than names. The disconnect between the inflammatory rhetoric and the absence of clear examples raises concerns about the political strategy behind the terminology.

California congressman offers symbolic definition without naming names

Rep. Ro Khanna from California, one of the leading proponents of the term, declined to identify specific individuals when asked directly. Presented with potential examples including Elon Musk, George Soros, and Tom Steyer, the congressman avoided confirming whether any of these billionaires qualified as members of the so-called Epstein Class. Instead, he provided a conceptual framework focused on behavior rather than individuals.

According to Khanna, the term refers to “a group of powerful and wealthy men more concerned with their status and networks than decency and humanity.” He explained that the Epstein files revealed elites who viewed young girls abused by Epstein as “dispensable in order to maintain their standing.” The congressman characterized this as evidence of the “callowness, vanity, and vacuity” of a governing elite responsible for creating an “lopsided and unfair economy.”

When confronted about the similarity between this rhetoric and conspiracy theories alleging secret cabals controlling society, Khanna attempted to distance himself from the most extreme implications. He clarified the term was “symbolic for the network Epstein collected” rather than evidence of an actual coordinated conspiracy. “I am not alleging a secret cabal. I reject such conspiracy,” the representative stated.

Messaging shifts from governing elite to vague economic criticism

During the exchange, Khanna’s description of the Epstein Class underwent significant evolution. He initially characterized it as a “governing elite” before walking back that language when challenged. The congressman then reframed his argument to focus on “an elite that has disproportionate political influence through their wealth because of Citizens United,” referencing the 2010 Supreme Court decision on campaign finance.

  • Original characterization: governing elite connected to Epstein network
  • Revised description: wealthy individuals with political influence
  • Final framing: “economic royalists” empowered by Citizens United ruling
  • Comparison: similar to Occupy Wall Street’s “1%” rhetoric

The progression revealed that the Epstein Class terminology essentially recycles earlier progressive messaging about wealth inequality, but with the added association to child sexual abuse. By the conversation’s end, the concept had devolved from allegations about specific powerful deviants into familiar arguments about campaign finance reform and economic inequality. The grotesque reference to Epstein appeared to serve primarily as rhetorical packaging for long-standing left-wing economic critiques.

Republicans also embrace populist terminology without evidence

The Epstein Class rhetoric has not remained confined to Democratic circles. Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and outgoing Rep. Thomas Massie from Kentucky have both adopted the terminology, demonstrating its appeal across ideological boundaries within populist movements. On the emerging isolationist and populist right, politicians and podcasters have deployed the Epstein Class label to explain various policy positions, from America’s Middle East diplomacy to cultural debates about transgender rights.

However, these right-wing adopters similarly fail to provide specific evidence or named individuals when making their claims. The pattern suggests the term functions more as a rhetorical device than a description of verifiable reality. Whether used by progressives criticizing corporate power or conservatives questioning foreign policy establishment, the Epstein Class serves as a vague placeholder for whatever elites the speaker opposes.

Socialist terminology gains ground within Democratic Party

The evolution from “The 1%” to “Epstein Class” reflects broader ideological shifts within American progressive politics. While Occupy Wall Street failed to achieve its policy objectives fifteen years ago, its core messaging about wealth concentration appears increasingly influential within the Democratic Party mainstream. The adoption of ever-more-provocative terminology to describe economic elites suggests growing comfort with explicitly class-based political rhetoric.

Critics argue this rhetorical escalation poses genuine dangers. By attaching the name of a notorious sex offender to general criticisms of wealthy individuals involved in politics, the terminology implies criminal behavior without providing evidence. The lack of specific accusations or named targets makes the claims simultaneously inflammatory and unfalsifiable. Opponents see this as a populist tactic that demonizes success and entrepreneurship while offering no concrete policy solutions.

The term’s flexibility also enables its use across the political spectrum, from progressive Democrats criticizing corporate influence to populist Republicans questioning establishment foreign policy. This versatility suggests “Epstein Class” functions primarily as rhetorical shorthand allowing speakers to invoke moral outrage about elite power without specifying which elites or what specific actions warrant condemnation. Until proponents can identify concrete examples of who belongs to this alleged class and what specific misconduct they have committed, the terminology remains more political slogan than meaningful analysis.
