Arias, Palmeiras player, sees Colombia with ‘great expectations’ for the World Cup campaign
Midfielder Arias, a key player in the Colombian national team, showed consideration when addressing the team’s chances at the 2026 World Cup, even after the convincing 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan, in their Group K debut at the Azteca stadium, in Mexico. He emphasized the team’s solidity, despite its cautious stance.
After the match, the Palmeiras athlete highlighted the need to focus on each match individually, although he admitted that the squad has considerable hopes for its performance in the global competition.
“We know that this is a highly difficult tournament, and it is crucial to remain humble, focusing step by step. Only the future will reveal our reach. Naturally, expectations are high, as we have a team of excellent quality and great individual talents. However, time will be the judge of our progress”, declared the player.
Arias also highlighted the progression of the national team in recent years, indicating that the recent good results serve as a basis for Colombia fans to cherish the dream of a memorable participation in the World Cup, a growing ambition driven by the cohesion and talent demonstrated on the field.
“We need to be convinced that it is doable. Our team has shown, both now and throughout its history, that it has a robust formation, full of high-level athletes, and the Colombian people, without a doubt, have reasons to dream”, concluded the midfielder.
With this triumph, Colombia reaches the isolated top of Group K, adding three points. The team opens up a two-point lead over Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo, who were tied during the afternoon in Houston, in the United States. Uzbekistan, in turn, begins its journey in the competition in last position, without any points.
For the next round, the Colombian team will face the Democratic Republic of Congo, in a match scheduled for Tuesday, at 11pm, in the city of Akron. On the same day, Portugal and Uzbekistan will face each other at 2 pm, in Houston.
