The online shooter Destiny 2 will stop receiving new updates from June 9th this year. The decision, announced by developer Bungie last Thursday (21), comes nine years after the launch of the era-defining title.

In an official statement, the company clarified that, despite maintaining appreciation for the game, it became evident that, after the arrival of “The Final Shape” expansion, the current structure had reached its limit. The goal is to allow the “Destiny” franchise to prosper and evolve beyond the current version of the game.

The developer has guaranteed, however, that the Destiny 2 universe will remain accessible and playable even after active development ends. Modifications will be implemented to optimize the experience for those who decide to return to the game.

Since its launch in 2017 as a paid online adventure game set in a shared universe, Destiny 2 has undergone major changes. One of the most significant was the transition to the free-to-play model, accompanied by the separation of Bungie from its former distributor, Activision.

To keep the game’s ecosystem always current, Bungie had replaced the traditional model of annual updates. Instead, the game began to operate with a more flexible system of dynamic seasons and episodes.

The most recent expansion, “The Final Shape”, reached the public in 2024 and received praise from specialized critics. Despite this, the launch failed to reverse the constant decrease in the number of active players of the title.

With the move, the company intends to direct its efforts towards a “new beginning” for Bungie, as stated in its statement. Isso inclui o desenvolvimento e a “incubação” de seus próximos projetos de jogos, sinalizando um planejamento de longo prazo para a companhia e para a continuidade da saga Destiny.
