This week, Russia’s capital, Moscow, experienced an atypical and worrying scenario: residents reported an “oil rain” that left black stains on their clothes and on the streets, a direct consequence of a massive attack by Ukrainian drones. The offensive hit an oil refinery in the metropolitan region, causing a strong explosion that blew the roof of the facility into the air and generated dense smoke visible from kilometers away.

The incident brought to light the growing vulnerability of Russian infrastructure in the face of Kiev’s aerial attacks, which have intensified in recent months. The incident not only caused significant material damage, but also raised concerns about public health and environmental impact, amid warnings and, on the other hand, denials from local authorities about the extent of the “rain”.

The unexpected “tar rain” in Moscow and its visible effects

Shortly after the drone attack, residents of Moscow began reporting the fall of a dark, dense liquid from the sky. Complaints quickly spread across social media, where users shared images of clothes, vehicles and surfaces stained by drops of black oil. This phenomenon, nicknamed “tar rain”, generated a wave of apprehension among the population, who felt the direct consequences of the conflict firsthand.

The situation was confirmed by international press vehicles, which collected statements about the discomfort and confusion caused by the event. While some tried to clean up the marks, others questioned the health and safety risks to their communities. The reality experienced on the streets contrasted with the initial official statements, creating a climate of uncertainty.

The air attack on the refinery and the collateral damage in the city

The main focus of the Ukrainian offensive was an oil refinery located on the outskirts of Moscow, a strategic target to destabilize the Russian economy and its ability to sustain the war effort. Hit by multiple drones, the facility suffered a large explosion, which resulted in the roof detaching, according to videos recorded by witnesses.

In addition to the refinery, other structures in the capital were also affected. A residential building, an industrial area and several houses suffered damage, increasing the scale of the impact. The effects of the attack extended to air traffic, leading to the temporary suspension of operations at Moscow’s main airport and the evacuation of people in some areas, highlighting the ability of drone attacks to disrupt daily life in the metropolis.

Response from Russian authorities and denial of popular reports

Faced with reports of “oil rain” and widespread damage, Moscow authorities issued statements that attempted to manage public perception. Although Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that Ukrainian drones struck the refinery, the city council denied the large-scale “oil rain” occurred, attributing the dust and soot to other factors. However, warnings were made for the population to keep windows closed and, in some cases, children, elderly people and asthmatics to be removed from areas closest to the incidents.

This official stance, which on the one hand recognizes the attack but on the other minimizes its visible consequences, reflects the complexity of communication in times of war. The discrepancy between residents’ experiences and authorities’ statements could generate distrust and fuel internal debates about transparency and public safety amid a conflict increasingly close to Russia’s large urban centers.

The growing wave of drone attacks on Russian territory

This week’s raid on the Moscow refinery was not an isolated event; in fact, it represents the escalation of a tactic increasingly used by Ukraine to take the war to Russian territory. This was the second time the same refinery was attacked in as many days, underlining Kiev’s persistence and determination to strike strategic targets inside Russia. The numbers released by Russia indicate the size of this new battlefront:

  • 555 drones destroyed: Russia claims to have shot down a total of 555 Ukrainian drones on its territory this Thursday alone, a number that, if confirmed, highlights the intensity of aerial operations.
  • 180 drones in Moscow: Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that 180 drones were shot down in the capital region alone, reinforcing the concentration of attacks in areas of strategic importance.

This strategy of deep strikes is seen as a way of putting pressure on Russia internally, disrupting its logistics and military production, and demonstrating that no part of the country is immune to the consequences of war. For Ukraine, it is a way to balance forces and respond to continued Russian aggression on its own territory.

Symmetrical clashes: missiles in Kiev and attacks on infrastructure

In a direct parallel to the attacks on Moscow, the Ukrainian capital Kiev has also faced a series of recent bombings. Russian ballistic missiles were launched at the city, triggering air raid warnings across much of the country. In Sumy, in northeastern Ukraine, a drone strike resulted in the death of one person. These incidents underscore the reciprocal and escalatory nature of the conflict, where both sides seek to inflict profound damage on the adversary.

Attacks on civil and military infrastructure have become a hallmark of the war, with devastating consequences for the population. Ukraine has justified its actions against Russian targets as a necessary response to the invasion and destruction of its own cities and resources. The intensification of these symmetrical clashes reflects the absence of a diplomatic resolution and the determination of both sides to maintain military pressure.

G7 meetings: support for Ukraine and new sanctions against Russia

Amid the military escalation, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, maintained an intense diplomatic agenda, participating in the G7 summit in France. The meeting brought together leaders of the world’s largest economies, including the presidents of the United States and France, and the prime ministers of the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada and Japan, as well as the chancellor of Germany and representatives of the European Union.

Zelensky took the opportunity to discuss the application of new sanctions against Russia and gain support for his country’s accession to the European Union. French diplomats indicated that G7 leaders agreed that battlefield dynamics favor Ukraine and promised more air defense capabilities. Zelensky emphasized the need for “creative solutions” for rapid EU entry and pushed for an intensification of sanctions on the Russian energy, banking and military sectors.

Former US President Donald Trump, also present at the summit, called the meeting “very good” and suggested that Russia should seek a peace agreement, affirming its commitment to working towards an end to the conflict. On his social media, Zelensky detailed the priorities discussed with the US, including the supply of air defense missiles, production licenses, a winter support package and increased pressure on Russia. These discussions reflect the ongoing international effort to support Kiev and isolate Moscow.

The vital role of foreign military and financial aid

Ukraine’s sustenance in the war depends significantly on the support of its international allies, who continue to provide military and financial assistance. A recent example of this commitment comes from Germany. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that the country will finance a quarter of the United States’ new weapons package, contributing 200 million euros.

This aid is crucial not only to replenish Ukraine’s arsenal, but also to strengthen its defense capabilities against Russian attacks and allow the country to continue its own offensives. Collaboration between G7 countries and other allies demonstrates unity in responding to Russian aggression and determination to ensure that Ukraine has the resources necessary to defend its sovereignty and territory.
