Carlo Ancelotti chooses Gabriel Magalhães to stop the Brazilian team’s defensive crisis against Haiti
The Brazilian team faces Haiti this Friday (19) under pressure, after a series of unsatisfactory defensive results. The team conceded goals in six consecutive matches, a sequence not seen since Tite’s time in charge in 2019, which demonstrates an unusual fragility for the team.
The expectation to reverse this scenario falls on a player who has experienced notable defensive success. Gabriel Magalhães, Arsenal’s key defender, was one of the pillars for the English club to win the Premier League with what many consider the best defense in Europe.
Arsenal, who celebrated the English title after 22 years, ended last season having conceded just 27 goals in 38 league clashes. In the Uefa Champions League, the defensive performance was even more robust, with just seven goals conceded in 15 games. Adding up all competitions, the club allowed 43 goals in 63 appearances.
“When we enter the field, the priority is not to concede goals. We are aware that, by protecting our goal, the chances of achieving victory increase”, declared Magalhães, who returns to the starting line-up of the Brazilian defense after recovering from muscular issues.
The objective for the confrontation at Lincoln Financial Field, in Philadelphia, is explicit: win with a wide margin. This aims to build an advantage in goal difference, a crucial factor in the race for the top of Group C, highlighting the strategic importance of a good score. Earlier, Scotland and Morocco meet at 7pm (Brasília time) in Foxborough.
However, before focusing on artillery, the team first needs to shield its own defense, a task that has proven challenging in the Brazilian team’s recent meetings.
“We understand the importance of not conceding goals, and this requires a joint effort. We will go into the match with a positive mentality, determined to defend well and come away with victory”, said the defender.
