Pochettino is confident in the USA’s World Cup campaign and preaches a work mantra
The United States team started the World Cup with an impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay, solidifying the message that coach Mauricio Pochettino has been transmitting since the beginning of his tenure: the objective of winning the title is achievable.
After this successful debut in the championship hosted in his own country, the Argentine coach, commander of the North American team, emphasized the relevance of mental posture to maintain a good performance during the competition, a factor that gains even more weight given the expectation of playing at home and the team’s recent history in major tournaments.
“We must dream without limits”, declared Pochettino in an interview with the American newspaper The Athletic.
The coach added an analogy about the breadth of objectives: “Don’t stop our dreams from dreaming. If I dream of touching the Moon, being on the Moon, maybe I can get close to it. If I just dream of getting close, I’ll stay on Earth.”
The lofty aspiration mentioned by Pochettino is directly connected to the team’s continuous improvement. Since his appointment to lead the US national team in 2024, the coach has focused on both the mental transformation and the team’s tactical adjustments.
The idea of forming a squad with a more offensive, incisive stance and capable of confronting elite opponents without hesitation is already visible in the first rounds of the World Cup.
“It’s not just about believing, it’s about working tirelessly every day to achieve this goal and competing with dedication in each match,” explained the coach.
“Believe. Work. Compete. Believe. Work. Compete. This is an uninterrupted cycle. By combining this mentality with the talent we already know exists in the group, we can get closer to glory. We have the ability to achieve feats of great relevance”, underlined Pochettino.
The United States will face a new opponent this Friday: Australia, in a match to be played at Seattle Field. This confrontation is decisive and could guarantee passage to the next phase of the World Cup, providing an additional chance for the team to demonstrate on the field the security conveyed by its commander.
“It is essential that certain conditions align to win a World Cup, but we genuinely believe. Today, we focus on three essential words: Believe, work and compete,” declared Pochettino.
