The messaging platform WhatsApp has started the testing phase for a new feature that allows messages to disappear immediately after individual viewing. This initiative represents a significant advance by the company in strengthening privacy tools for its users, reflecting a growing demand for greater control over the digital footprint and the ephemerality of communications.

According to reports in the specialized press, the functionality is still in an experimental stage, not available to the general public, and is undergoing adjustments before an eventual launch.

Sending content that is deleted when viewed

The concept behind the new system is simple: once the recipient opens the content, it automatically stops being visible. The main objective is to intensify the security of conversations and prevent information from being permanently stored on devices or disseminated without control.

However, the mechanism does not offer total protection against material recording, as it is still possible to use screen captures or video recordings to save what was sent.

  • Messages are visible only once after opening.
  • The feature enhances the sender’s control over the privacy of what is sent.
  • Currently, tests are being conducted on the TestFlight version, specifically for iOS.
  • There is no set date for the official launch of the tool to the public.
  • The functionality may still undergo significant changes before being widely available.

Functionality already present on other communication platforms

Although it is new for WhatsApp, this type of interaction is not new in the messaging application landscape. Other applications, such as Snapchat, Instagram, Telegram and Messenger, have been offering similar ephemeral messaging features for a considerable time.

For WhatsApp users, the situation was different until now. Those looking for a similar feature found themselves needing to employ informal alternatives, such as sending photographs configured to be viewed only once.

Initial testing stage identified on iOS devices

The new tool was discovered in the TestFlight version, an iPhone platform designed to test features before official distribution. This fact signals that the new product is still in a preliminary stage of development, subject to future modifications.
