World Cup duels: Canada and Mexico secure important victories, Czechia draws
Yesterday’s World Cup matches brought crucial results for the group stage dispute, with highlights being Canada’s historic first victory and the confirmation of Mexico’s leadership. Other clashes also moved the tables, maintaining the excitement until the last rounds.
Czechia and South Africa share points in crucial match
The Czech team started its journey on the field with strength, when Michal Sadílek found the net after just six minutes of play, catching South Africa in a moment of initial disorganization. However, in the second stage, the European team adopted a more defensive posture, allowing the South Africans to advance and seek the attack.
African persistence was rewarded in the 83rd minute of the second half, after the referee signaled a handball from Pavel Šulc. Teboho Mokoena successfully took the penalty, sealing the 1-1 draw. This result keeps both teams with a chance of qualifying, but both now face the obligation to win the next game to advance. South Africa will face South Korea, without the presence of Mokoena, who will be suspended, while Czechia will face Mexico.
Swiss thrashing of Bosnia and Herzegovina leads to classification
Switzerland built its significant victory only in the final minutes of the match, after a period of 73 minutes of play marked by balance and few opportunities created by both sides. The turnaround in the score began to be shaped with the entry of Johan Manzambi, led by coach Murat Yakin, who needed just a few moments on the field to open the score and completely change the outlook of the match.
The expulsion of Bosnian player Tarik Muharemovic made the Swiss team’s task easier, which extended the score with goals from Ruben Vargas, Granit Xhaka, from the penalty spot, and again Johan Manzambi. Bosnia’s goal of honor was scored by Ermin Mahmic. With the 4-1 victory, the Swiss now have four points and are approaching a place in the round of 16, while Bosnia, with just one point, will depend on a victory against Qatar to continue dreaming of qualifying.
Canada makes history with spectacular rout over Qatar
In the city of Vancouver, Canada experienced one of the most memorable nights of its World Cup history. The host team defeated Qatar 6-0, thus achieving their first victory in a men’s edition of the World Cup. Jonathan David was the highlight of the match, scoring three goals, with Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also contributing to the elastic score. The sixth Canadian goal was the result of an own goal.
Qatar ended the game with just nine players on the field, after two expulsions, one of which was due to a violent tackle by Assim Madibo on Ismaël Koné. The Canadian midfielder had to leave the field on a stretcher due to a serious leg injury. The incident generated a lot of anger and arguments among the athletes, culminating in a riot after the final whistle.
Mexico guarantees group A leadership after minimal victory
Mexico’s national team achieved an essential victory, despite not playing flashy football. After a balanced first half of play and with the fans in Guadalajara showing some impatience, the team led by Javier Aguirre managed to open the scoring at the beginning of the final stage. Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu, from South Korea, failed to handle an aerial ball, and Luis Romo took advantage of the opportunity to score the only goal of the match.
South Korea pressed intensely in the final minutes of the match, but came up against an impressive double save from Raúl Rangel. With two victories in two games played, Mexico secured the leadership of Group A in advance and the advantage of playing a knockout match at home, in Mexico City, on June 30, consolidating its campaign in the tournament.
